Subject: Built a Star Destroyer terrain piece - then played battle with lots of ships!

Hi everyone,
We built a Star Destroyer terrain piece this past weekend. (Well -- it was really just a side of the ship to put on one edge of our X-Wing mat.)
We set it up so that we could put our Turbo Laser Turrets inside. For this battle - since we had the Imperial Raider on the Empire side, we made the Star Destroyer out-of-commission. But, wondering about using the "energy rules" from the Raider to power up the Turrets for the next battle.
Here's a link to our build (cardboard and pink foam with sticker paper): http://battlegaming1.blogspot.de/2015/09/quick-x-wing-star-destroyer-model-for.html
By the way, it got really hard to keep track of the battle. Wondering if anyone has figured out a slick way to manage when there are so many ships ??
Thanks

I'd cut down on the number of unique ships, personally; rather than having one X-wing with this, one with that and one with the other, I'd have a flight group of three identical ones, and perhaps a unique named pilot too (the repaints from the Aces packs and huge ships help here).

Thats a lot of ships on a small table! looks like a bit of a cluster f**k! I would expect more than a few collisions and bumping.
If i did a make some form of a star destroyer I'd want a full star destroyer (probably scaled down) where imperial and rebel fliers can fly around it and under or over it (be cool if over and under was split, make dogfighting more interesting). I'd make it mission based where the rebels must destroy the star destroyer by taking out certain sections, weapons etc. of the star destroyer. The Imperials goal would to provide a fighter screen and attempt to prevent bombers and fighters getting through. Large ships may not work too well for this and I believe most large ships would/should get decimated by the star destroyer.
And depending on table size instead of all ships at once they're can be wave reinforcements (rebel from table edge, imperial from star destroyer). That would prevent a total mess on the table.

That's an idea; you could make the entire surface of the table, or half of it, the hull of a Star Destroyer, and mark one edge as the hangar, so new TIE Fighters will launch from there.

I ran some numbers, since you inspired me: if you average out the (current) cannon armament of a Star Destroyer, there would be 11 Turbolasers and 11 Ion Cannon in a 3'x3' play area. You can construct a portion of the Hull to use as a play surface, or construct a 16ft long star destroyer, an run a massive battle on it.

Hi everyone, love the idea of the Star Destroyer surface. Think we might give that a shot.
Other idea might be to make the edge much more substantial and up in the air a little bit -- although that might require 3D play with ships at grossly different levels.
Will have to study how to make the TIE fighter bays -- that is a very cool idea also!
Unfortunately the 16 foot ship won't fit in our game room - so we are going to have to focus on a section

You could just have 2 different tables one with the top of the star destroyer and one with the under side. You could have ships transition from one table to the other (at the same position) to represent moving under or over the star destroyer. Imperials spawn from the underside hangar and rebels from table-edge.
Maybe to account for imperials limited spawn point the star destroyer get to take some shots at approaching rebel ships (ones that are about to enter game?) or the imperials have control of weapons from the star destroyer.
To transition tables you could require ships to be range 1 from edge then spend a movement turn or full turn to move to other table. Pilots on one side of the ship wouldn't know the position of ships on the tops side so to account for that the ship transitioning could appear anywhere on that table edge (same it left on other table).
It'd kinda be like playing 2 games at once, and trying to have a presence on each table defending or attacking objectives. You could also do it with 4 players each person controls 1 of the fleets on 1 table.
You could do it with 2 3x3 tables but due to length of a star destroyer 2 3x6 would turn out best.
