I was playing a game in which I disembarked a group of Chaos Space Marines behind a rhino, to block line of sight and keep them safe for a turn. My opponent claimed he had line of sight with some missile launchers due to them being able to see an Icon of Wrath banner and the horns on my champion's helmet.

Can you claim line of sight to things like this, when in reality the models couldn't be hurt if shot there?

No, "decorative" things like banners, icons, even wings dont count.
Has to be head, arms, legs, torso.

Right so you can get the conundrum of something like a Hive tyrant behind terrain with only his wings sticking out covering up completely something like a tervigon behind him and neither are able to be shot at.

Yeah, its an odd quirk of the rules where wings can't be used to draw line of sight to the model with the wings, but those same wings still block line of sight to other models.

And you can use those wings to draw line of sight from.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

I thought you still had to draw LoS from your eyes or equivalent on the miniature?

Before everyone gets too excited...

Rulebook wrote:For one model to have line of sight to another, you must be able to trace a straight, unblocked line from its body (the head, torso, arms or legs) to any part of the target’s body.
Sometimes, all that will be visible of a model is a weapon, banner or other ornament he is carrying. In these cases, the model is not visible. Similarly, we ignore wings, tails and
antennae even though they are technically part of a model’s body.

It's been argued that the last part of that is referring to LOS from the model, but we're not given any other way to define the model's 'body', and there is no reason to assume that 'body' should mean one thing for LOS from the model and another thing for LOS to the model.

It's still a long way from perfect, but it is better written than in previous editions. Although we do still have the aforementioned problem of wings not counting for LOS to or from the model, but blocking LOS to models behind them.
