Subject: Shooting and the voidshield generator

Been Around the Block

So this came up in a recent game.
A unit inside of the voidshield makes a shooting attack at another unit also inside the shield.
Does the shots hit the shield or is it ignored?
Half of the unit is inside the shield the other half is outside and shooting at a unit inside the shield.
Do you resolve the hits on a model by model basis or does the whole unit count as being inside?

Depends if you view the void shield as an umbrella or an aura

The void shield rules specify that the attacks have to originate outside the shield.

This is the one that always give me issues. Same for shooting a unit that is half covered, half not covered.

When measuring range we use the closest points on the Base, or in case of Vehicles and Buildings we use Hull, unless told otherwise. Just keep in mind that the measurement in question is to determine if the Unit is under the 'Void Shield Projection' and thus protected. As the subjects of the Rule are 'Target' and 'Shooting Attacks' we know the Void Shield Projection is something that interacts with the Unit as a whole. To determine if the Unit is 'under' the Void Shield Projection we would measure from the closest spot on the Model's Base to the Hull the Generator, if that is less then X inches then the Unit is under the shield. Had Void Shield Projection mentioned Models, like many other 'bubble effects' limit themselves to, we would need to measure each individual Model to the Generator to see if it is under the shield but in this case it is closest in the Unit as a whole. Same goes to determine if the Shooting Unit is also underneath the Void Shield Projection. Can I once more go on record stating it is strange to resolve attacks against Special Rules....

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures. |

Seems the most reasonable way to read it.

Attacks from outside will hit the shield. Attacks from inside won't.
The target unit that is half covered is the only actual grey area... but I would play it as the unit just having to be within the stated distance of the generator, so just having one model in there is sufficient. It's a little dodgy-seeming on the surface, but it's how area of effect stuff generally works in 40K, unless it actually specifies that the whole unit has to be within the bubble.
