Death-Dealing Dark Angels Devastator

Hey Guys!

Two of my friends are thinking about starting a wh40k army. We decided to start escalation-league-like with 500 pts and increase the points value after a few games (so that the new guys will have some time for planning/building/painting their armies).

I decided to join in with my good old Dark Angels. I usually play Guard though, while my DAs were sleeping in some old boxes for a while. Picked up the new codex, but I guess I could use some advice, as I still think this may be a little to less Dakka.

My list so far:

Psyker Lv1 on Bike, Shroud of Heroes, MeltaBombs (100pts)

4 Ravenwing Bikers, 1 Flamer (105pts)

5 Tactical Marines (70pts)

5 Devastators 2 Plasmacannons (100pts)

5 Scouts, Bolter, 1 Missile-Launcher (70pts)

5 Scouts, Bolter (55pts)

==> The Psyker will be moving around the board, hunting vehicles and using interromancy to debuff the enemies. He's also good at eating enemy fire with his 2+ jink save. Bikers will get up close and personal, Tacs & Scouts will stand / take objectives.

The biggest problem I have is that i dont want an army that epically fails, but I also dont want to cheese (as we have 2 new players).

Advice is apprecciated.

Firstly, welcome to Dakka!

It certainly doesn't look like a cheese list - even taking out a rhino will take over half of your shooting (both plasma cannons and the ML - you'd need a 6 on the PC's to explode one, so you're relying on hull points) - and if you resort to killing it with the Librarian, he doesn't get to consolidate and will likely be caught by nearby enemies - even a 2+ will fail eventually, though he does have FnP too, he is your warlord and will make a tempting target. Remember that he doesn't get to re-roll the Jink as he doesn't have the Ravenwing rule.

Plenty of units to take objectives (scouts starting forward, and RW being fast), plenty of boltguns for the rank-and-file, I think mech is the only issue, but these are really small games. I think it'll do ok.

Since you already have 2 troops choices maybe turn one of the tactical squads into a mini devastator squad with the 2 plasma cannons and stick them on a back objective.

This would be better since they won't move you will be able to fire the cannons every turn.

The other tactical squad I'd give them a flamer or a meltagun (both can fire in the turn you assault) and then give the sergeant a combi melta or flamer (to match the special weapon you picked) and scrape around for the points to give them a drop pod so they can arrive first turn and alpha strike something (horde unit with flamers or vehicle with melta) - maybe drop the missile launcher on the scouts, and the shroud and meltabomb off the libby and run him with the bikers - the bikers can look out sir with rerollable 4+ jinks

First of all - thanks for the replies.

Guess I will turn 1 tac into devastors and give em the other tacs PC. I am thinking about switching the PCs for MLs though. I dont know wich armies I will face btw

Well if you have 2 MLs (or more) you could make a secondary devastator squad to sit on another back objective.

If you need squads to charge ahead and take objectives on your opponents side of the board then tacticals in droppods are the best - if you need squads to sit on objectives on your side of the board then devastators are the best - you don't want tacticals doing that since they will waste their bolter shots.

Tacticals in rhinos are kindof inbetween - you dont want them sitting on your end, and they can't get fast enough to your opponents side - but they are really great for controlling the middle of the table.

So - a good way of thinking how your army will work is how you intend on getting to the 6 objectives on the board.

Something like - the scouts will go for the ones in his end, the ravenwing and a tactical for the ones in the middle and a devastator for one in the back. The ravenwing are fast enough to support all 3.

Or you could think of it - 2 devastators squads for the 2 in your end, the ravenwing for the middle and support both ends and the scouts for the 2 in his end.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Note - if they were sniper scouts then the opposite, they would sit in your end while you send drop pod tacticals to his
