Hello everyone
I am trying to get a friend into AoS and have bought the starter set. Just have a few bloodreavers left to paint...
Now I got the impression that AoS works best in scenario-based games and I'm all for that stuff, but I would like to add a scenary piece to make the games more visual and exciting! But where to begin?

In your opinion, what is a good start? The gateways? The Archway? The occulum? A piece of dreadhold?

We will start with the scenarios in the starter book but where do we go from there? I don't have any of the big books to get scenarios from so what kit is fun and easy to build your own around?

Cheers

From my own experience, the Ophidian Archway was a bastard to assemble. Most of the pieces didn't fit properly. Can't comment on the others, though.

But was it fun to play with? Did it impact the way you played? I don't mind tricky assembling, had alot of Legos as a kid so putting things together is not a problem :-)

Hmm... To be interesting on the table in play, you say...

The Ophidian Archway is quite simple, if you get a Hero near it he might be able to call spirits down on his enemies.

The Dragonfate Dais looks nice and, if you have Priests in your force, can become a good centre point in a fight.

However, for utility, I would probably recommend;

1: Baleful Realmgates - you get two in the box, they allow you to bounce around the battlefield and chuck out random effects every turn.

Or

2. Skull Keep - will start you off towards a full Dreadhold, looks _very_ imposing on the table and gives a few tactical options. A more specialised variant would be the Malefic Gate. You'll be more limited in its use (corner of the battlefield only until you get more Dreadhold bits) but you will have a lot of fun getting those gates to open

I've never bought scenery before but tempted to pick up the tree pack. Don't think you can go wrong with that if you don't have trees already.

I haven't used it in a game yet..

If you're playing the Bloodbound, then my God do I suggest you get yourself the Skull Keep. It's pricey for a single terrain piece, but you know your Bloodsecrator and his Portal of Skulls ability with its 18 inch range?

Park him on the Skull Keep's little balcony and that range becomes thirty six inches. It is a bastard to dislodge and it really shifts the dynamic of a Bloodbound army to have 36 inches of "NO BATTLESHOCK! WOOOO!".

I own both the Ophidian Gate and the Numinous Occulum. I really love the designs and detail on both but the casting and material is not up to par with, say their 40k terrain. They seem to be made of a plastic that doesn't hole detail as well and is prone to slightly warping. Not bad enough to make the kits unusable but it makes assembly a bit harder and you will need some green stuff to plug gaps. I would recommend them with that caveat. I haven't used them as "active" scenery yet so can't comment on that, looks like pretty simple but potentially powerful rules.

Over here those are even more expensive than GW scenery!

Wow, that's pretty expensive!

At the moment this temple gate, very similar to a realm gate, is £12 and there is a 3 for 2 offer.

So for £24 you can get three of them, with free delivery (in UK) and they are ready painted.

Why not Garden of Morr? (http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Garden-of-Morr) sure it's 8th style than Age of Sigmar style, but as the pieces are all modular you get lots of bang for your buck.

The set won't be around for much longer, either!

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Yeah, I second the Garden of Morr suggestion, it just looks gorgeous on the tabletop.

Otherwise I would highly recommend the Baleful Realmgate, you can do fun things with the gates' portals and the fact you get two to a box gives you even more terrain to use with a single purchase!

For starters I recommend either the Baleful Realmgates or Ophidian Archway. The tutorial that GW published for the Realmgates is excellent to getting you started on painting other terrain projects as well.

Rules wise my experience has been pretty positive. We have used the Temple of Skulls to make defiant offerings to our gods and epic last stand duels. The portals have led to table to table invasions, as well as offering a 2nd choke point/attack point.

The Wildwoods is also a awesome piece we had fun with. We often will make it so you have to either choose to cross it for easier attacking position or take a longer way around it.

I know you get two gates in a box, but do you get two Archways too? That would be phenomenal...

Actually I stand corrected. A customer recently brought in two and I only saw him purchase one. So I was under assumption they had two in them. Even then it's a great piece and having it as a choke point or objective really makes you exploit all the benefits the terrain piece has.

Yeah, the Archway kit is still gorgeous, it would have been a surprisingly good deal from GW if you got two. Too good a deal

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

The Garden of Morr argument about it not being around much longer is a good one but the rules for it is just affecting armies from death so thats a bummer.

I went with the Archway becaus it has rules that can apply to any army since everyone will be bringing one HERO at least and it gives cover bonus wich will make movement abit more important around it.

Cheers
