What's the preferred ways of getting Honor Guard (HG) into combat and what mix of weapons have been successful?

Do you have a tanky HQ leading them? If so, you might be OK stepping out of a drop pod, eating a round of fire, then charging. 2+ save is nice, but you are still T4 1W guys.

Land Raiders of some flavor are a solid, albeit overpriced, assault transport.

I’d spring for the banner. IMHO you want a few guys swinging at initiative, and a few axes just in case you need to take down some TEQ. So a good mix of swords, mauls, and axes. Spears if they float your boat, but they kinda suck. I wouldn’t go full relic blade, but tossing one in could work. A lot depends on what you expect to face.

And what you enjoy modeling. I personally built mine with 3xswords, 1 axe, 1 relic, plus the banner.

Stormraven or Land Raider for transport.

I usually do 10 HG
2 have relic blades
Champion has a Thunderhammer and his bolt gun is replaced with a CCW
Then you have the chapter banner in there

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

Speaking for myself, I always build for a theoretical tournament setting where I could face anything and everything, so TAC is the name of the game for me.

Land Raiders are terrible when the Spartan Assault Tank is a thing. Just be sure to buy Schism Of Mars for it to help stop Haywire shenanigans.
Otherwise, dropping them in a Pod works if you do it in the very middle of everything. Sevrin for auto Invisibility is highly recommended.
