So I'm looking for advice on which units I should populate my Army with. For the core, I'm looking for a general all-purpose sort of layout.

I'm thinking of starting with Ghost Ark and Warriors.

I've also heard good things about the Overlord/Command Barge (is it still?).

After that, what is generally recommended?

2 ghost arks
2 x 10 warriors (comes with scarabs, yay!)
1 x 5 immortals (gauss)
2 x 3 tomb blades (make them gauss)

6 wraiths
1 spyder
9 destroyers, mod 3 to be heavy
1 destroyer lord
1 overlord (get the catacomb command barge kit which comes with plastic overlord - so you can run either bargelord or regular overlord)
Nemesor Zandrekh

Also known as a Decurion with Canoptek Harvest and Destroyer Cult. Tomb Blades and Destroyers have a bit more focus in my 'if I played Necrons' list but that is where personal taste comes in.

Collecting Necrons is pretty simple with the new codex...the codex kind of lays it all out for you. Start by collecting a Reclamation Legion. I believe this can be acquired by buying a Necron Battleforce set (added bonus it has a Ghost Ark), a box of Tomb Blades, and an HQ. My recommendation for HQ is always Nemesor Zandrekh, but if you like the Command Barge its not a bad option. After that, I'd look at what Auxiliary Formations catch your fancy. Canoptek Harvest is probably the most potent...I play with a Destroyer Cult alot, and it is also very, very nasty....really with one or two exceptions, all the formations are good for something.

But the "cost of entry" for the Decurion detachment is the Reclamation Legion formation, so you'll want a Necron Battleforce box, a box of Tomb Blades, and an HQ to start with.

Since my income is pretty erratic (joys of being a freelancer), I've decided to start with the Necron Battle Pack. It's choices seem to be pretty well-rounded to get an army off the ground.

From there I'll get a Spyder, Command Barge, Wraiths, probably a Doomsday Ark and then just keep adding whatever I feel from there.
