Hello all, I'm brand new to dakka, and this is my very first post. So apologies if this isn't the correct thread to post this. I've always loved Warhammer, but just recently decided to make it my primary hobby, I have a bit of experience painting, but not that much, so any and all tips are welcome and much appreciated! Also I tend to ramble so I apologize ahead of time for that hahaha.
Right now I'm painting a small Nurgle themed AoS Chaos army, very excited, but torn on which colors to use. I scrubbed all my models from their previous Slaaneshi color scheme and am starting fresh in devotion to Papa Nurgle. I have about $20 to use to buy 4 paints today. Won't be able to get more for about 3 weeks so I need to choose wisely, which is why I've come here :]
I'm leaning towards Deathworld Forest as a base. I think it's a great Nurgle color imo. Green enough to stand out as followers of Nurgle, and that dirty color that Nurgle loves. What other paints would compliment it for layering/drybrushing/washes? Since I can only get 4 paints today I'm thinking: Deathworld Forest, Straken Green OR Elysian Green, Agrax Earthshade(for a wash), and Waywatcher Green(a glaze). I love the look of Waywatcher, I think it's a great choice for today to highlight the Nurgley parts, especially on the Beast of Nurgle and for all future Nurgle daemons. If you disagree with that let me know please, if something else would work better I'd love to know :] I also considered "Nurgle's Rot, but I imagine I'd only really use that on the Beast of Nurgle until I get Plaguebearers, so I'll buy Nurgle's Rot when I get them. Unless you guys Nurgle's Rot could be used somehow on Chaos Warriors/Knights? If so I'd love some tips on that! The only shade I have right now is a black wash that I made myself out of "Matt Black", soap, and water, so I desperately need a wash and at least 1 wash is an absolute must. I figure Agrax would suit Nurgle troops the best, what do you guys think?
I'm also thinking Castellan Green as a base, and maybe layering and/or drybrushing Deathworld Forest, and highlighting with Waywatcher Green. What do you guys think of that? Would it work better than the previous idea? At the moment I have 3 warriors painted in a scheme with a green I made that looks a bit like Waagh! Flesh. Now I regret this, they look ok, but when I get the new better paints ill have to repaint them. Oh well no biggie.
I have a small collection of paints, so I'll list them now in case anyone has suggestions for further complimentary colors.
-Citadel Paints-
Mephiston Red, Sotek Green, Nurgling Green, Auric Armour Gold, Vermin Brown(very little left), Scorched Brown(also very little left), Flesh Wash, Scab Red, Black Ink(can anyone tell me exactly how and where this ink would be used? It's not exactly a wash is it?), Boltgun Metal(sooo old that it actually looks silver for some reason), and 'ardcoat.
-The Army Painter Warpaints-
Leather Brown, Matt White, Matt Black, Ash Grey, Alien Purple, Strong Tone(is this like flesh wash?) Necrotic Flesh, Skeleton Bone, Crystal Blue, and Gun Metal.
-Custom Paints I made-(names I made up, any that match real paints are completely coincidental)
"Tainted Gold": a 3:1:1 mix of Auric Armour Gold, Mephiston Red, and Leather Brown respectively, meant to be a bronzeish color. "Skelly Skin" a 3:1 mix of Skeleton Bone and Matt White. "Blacksteel" a 3:1 mix of Gun Metal and Matt Black. "Wargrass" a 4:3:1 mix of Angel Green(all out if it now :/) Necrotic Flesh, and Nurgling Green, it looks a bit like Waaagh! Flesh.
I'm really sorry for rambling on so much! It's a character flaw of mine xD. Any tips on paints and techniques for painting Nurgle Troops or just painting in general would be greatly appreciated! I think some sort of plaguey power of the warp eminating from their weapons would be really neat, like how VC skeletons have Sotek Green(or w.e paint it is) in the recesses of their armor/weapons but Nurgle looking on my warriors. Any ideas on how to do that? Thanks so much in advance guys!!

Prime it brown (Army Painter Leather Brown)
Deathworld Forest base
Rotting Flesh layer (might have a new name now?)
Then wash with either Ashtonian Camoshade or Reikland Flesh
Pick out pus bubbles and other details
Looks pretty decent for a green/rotting-ish scheme

I was thinking something along the exact same lines, rotting flesh is now Nurgling Green, which is what I planned on layering over the Deathworld. Do you have a picture of a model with this color scheme? I'd love to see it! I was literally just about to put the order in haha good timing. Do you suggest using asthonian camoshade on the green armor instead of Agrax Earthshade? I can spring for 5 paints now, was gonna get bugmans glow for the cloak but maybe I'll get athonian instead.
Also do you have an easier time with a leather brown undercoat instead of a black one? I'll have to try it on my warriors/Knights.

Athonian Camoshade is amazing. For Nurgle, I've found it to be much more nurgley than Agrax earthshade. It's a green-brown and it just works. I wish I had started using it sooner.
Ok awesome. I ended up ordering: Agrax Earthshade, Athonian Camoshade, Deathworld Forest, Bugman's Glow, and Waywatcher Green. In hindsight I'm very glad I got the camoshade instead of Castellan Green. Worst case, I can just modify the Deathworld.
Any tips on which washes to use where on Chaos warriors/knights? I'm figuring camoshade on the armor that's painted Deathworld, layered with Nurgling Green and highlighted with the Waywatcher Green glaze(if it works out well), and Agrax on the rest of the model? Probably gonna do the cloak of the warriors in Bugman's.
This will be my very first time using legit washes. Man am I sick of my homemade black wash lol.
Thanks again guys!

Ok Peter Wiggin, I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the input :]
And I was also thinking of Nurgle's Rot over Waywatcher Green, Ghaz, but I'm not sure how well I'd do with it on Chaos warriors/Knights. Gonna get a couple botttles of it when I get some plaguebearers! Looks like such a great Nurgle "aid" I can't wait to try it.
Thanks both for your replies!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Seeing the video I wish I could've gotten it, maybe would've put a little of it in between the armor plates as pus and ooze leaking from armor. Dang that'd be cool! Ah well definitely next time.

Nurgle's Rot isn't a wash. Put it wherever you want to simulate ooze running/dripping. Experiment a bit because it's appearance once it dries is ... different.

Ahh ok thanks for the heads up albinoork. I'll keep that in mind. Think it could be used for "swampy" VC skellys?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Since I only have a couple regiments of chaos, I'd like to think of a way to have the one box of skellys I have fit in with the Nurgle troops. If anyone has pics and/or tips on that please lemme know!

You can most assuredly use it as a glaze.
