Subject: Roadkill Zombie's Epic 40k painting blog - Legio Ignatum (Fire Wasps)!

Hi Dakka,
Back in 1995 I was introduced to a game from Games Workshop called Adeptus Titanicus. It was a game based on the Titans of the Imperium battling it out with the Titans of the Traitor Legions. Needless to say I was immediately hooked. Then I learned of a game companion to Adeptus Titanicus called Space Marine. As I'm sure you all know, it is the game of the Emperors finest fighting desperate battles against their traitorus brother marines. Again I was hooked.
All of this was my first forage into Wargaming, having only played role playing games up to that point. So I started collecting everything I could get my hands on for Adeptus Titanicus and Space Marine.
Today, I have tons of models for what came to be known as the Epic genre of games.
Here are the covers of them as they progressed from one game to the next.
First, Adeptus Titanicus
Then Space Marine
Then the second edition of Space Marine came out
followed by Adeptus Titanicus renamed Epic Titan Legions
At this point, GW decided to expand the game and add more factions in like the Imperial Guard
The Orks and Squats
The Eldar and Chaos
And lastly, the Tyranids
Eventually, Gw decided to re vamp the whole system and created what became known as Warhammer Epic 40,000
And right before stopping the specialist games completely, GW created the 4th version of the game that was mainly online called Warhammer Epic 40,000 Armageddon.
With the 3rd edition of the game they made the tiny Epic models resemble their Warhammer 40,000 equivalents more closely than they had ever done before, yet the rules for 3rd edition are often considered by many to be the worst rules for the Epic system ever made.
Since GW stopped producing this game, many in the gaming community have picked it up and continue to play it and even make their own conversions for it. Many different rules systems have come out for it since then from the much lauded Net Epic EA to the Net Epic Gold and a bunch of others.
But in my case I prefer the 2nd edition Space Marine and Titan Legions. But I am not averse to learning how to play the others either, its just that I paid for the rules for 2nd edition so I may as well get as much use out of them as I can.
Anyway, I am starting this blog because my work finally got me working only 3 days a week, gave me a dollar an hour raise, raised up the amount they pay for mileage for travelling to 40 cents a mile and now I have 4 days off every week and still get my 40 hours a week in.
So this leaves me with a lot more time for doing things I have been neglecting like painting my Epic!
Now, in the past I collected models from ebay and anywhere else I could to increase my Epic collection. So most of my painted Epic models were painted by other people. Shame on me! I haven't been giving my Epic models the paintjob they deserve. So while I have a lot of painted models, from beasties...
Tyranid Lictors
Tyranid Genestealers
Tyranid Warriors
Tyranid Hormagaunts
Tyranid Termagants
Tyranid Gargoyles
Tyranid Hive Tyrants
Tyranid Malefactors
To the Emperors Finest...
Dark Angels ( I painted these)
Ultramarines
Blood Angels
Space Wolves
To Xenos....
Eldar
Orks
To the minions of Chaos
to the giant Titans and Gargants
Imperial Warlord Titan front
Imperial Warlord Titan rear
Imperial Reaver Titan
Banelord Chaos Titan of Khorne front
and sides
Ork Gargants
I also have a lot of unpainted and partly painted stuff that needs some love...
And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
So as you can see, I have a lot of work to do. So this is the blog I am going to try to keep to track my progress in my painting. Now, the problem is, where to begin?

I agree. The engagements they talk about in the stories for the Heresy would be way too big to try to replicate in Warhammer 30k. Epic scale is the right scale for that. And it is even hard to do battles like the Battle for the Emperors Palace in epic scale. There were just too many warriors involved.
Its too bad you were not able to get into it way back in the day. But it is still going strong these days, even though GW fails to support it. It really is worth getting in to.
And one of the plusses I've noticed with Epic is that you never really have that overpowered army build that breaks the game so that the whole game becomes unplayable. That really makes the game much more enjoyable to me...and besides where else are you going to be able to command so many tanks without spending thousands of dollars on them? Automatically Appended Next Post: Well, I finally decided that the army I want to start working on is my Squats. Why? Because they were the very first army I picked up for this game. So they are my oldest models. It's about time they saw some paint.
In the Epic Space Marine game the way you choose forces for the Squats is to first choose a company card. So I chose to get a Squat Guild Biker force. This card consists of 2 Biker squadrons of 1 guildmaster on a trike, and 7 guild biker stands plus 1 guildmaster on a trike and 5 guild trikes.
Now for each Company card you can choose one Special card, and up to five support cards. So for my Special card I chose a Squat Cyclops. This model is effectively a super heavy vehicle that mounts the cannon from a Starship on it.
I decided to reinforce my Guild Biker force by choosing two more Guild Trike Squadron support cards and three Iron Eagle Gyrocopter Squadron support cards. Iron Eagle's are basically planes that mount a Battlecannon in the nose and two autocannons near the back. They are about the only vehicle the Squats have that can keep up with the Guild Biker force.
This is the whole company with all of its support.
I know I want the colors to have lots of golds and probably some reds in there too. So I just have to come up with a good paint scheme and get to it. I will try to get at least some of this done by the end of next weekend. Now to get started!

Thanks guys, I'm very glad you like it. Stay tuned because this blog is going to show a lot of my Epic miniatures. I have quite a few. Not as many as Primarch does but who am I kidding, Nobody except him has that many Epic mini's
So today I made progress on a few miniatures. They aren't completed yet but they are getting there. Today was very busy for me so I only had about an hour to work on them. I figure if I work on the miniatures for about an hour every day, eventually I will get them all painted. (Of course I plan on painting them much longer than that on non busy days )
The first batch of Guild Trikes with a brown undercoat where I wanted to paint the red so it didn't turn pink.
Then I added the first red coat, hoping it turned out well. I don't think it turned out bad at all really. I didn't bother worrying about overspill of the paint because the tires on the trikes are going to be black anyway. By the time they are all done they will be all cleaned up and hopefully great looking. I would hate to have to re paint all of these minis.
Then I decided to prime the Cyclops white and give it an undercoat of brown wash so it will also help the red to not turn pink.
Hopefully at work tomorrow I won't be so busy that I can't paint. Anyway, that's today's update. Enjoy.

Glad to see you enjoy my blog Bash. I hope the rest of what I post is just as nostalgic for you. It certainly has been for me.
For my next painting project after the Guildmaster I think I'll try my hand at a squadron or three of Iron Eagle Gyrocoptors.
That should be a lot of fun. I've always liked them. It's one of the vehicles I always wish they would have made for Warhammer 40,000.

So I got a little bit of progress done on three of the Iron Eagle Gyrocopter squadrons. I still need a few coats of each color though.
Painting these made me think of some of the other Squat stuff I had today and got me wondering how hard it is going to be to paint them up. For instance, the Squat Grand Battery. It is ten Mole Mortars and five Thudd Guns and each base has two little Squats with it.
Then it got me wondering if I should start working on my larger Squat Grand Battery. The 40k sized one.
Nah...I think once I am done with this Company Card and all of it's support cards I might switch to a different army for a while. Maybe Chaos or Orks. Or maybe some Titans. I can't make up my mind yet. Is there any particular army anyone wants to see? (Sorry, I don't have Tau, Dark Eldar, or Necrons. There were no rules for them in 2nd edition Epic so I didn't bother trying to get them or scratch build them.)

Yep, camo on red trikes is a terrible idea in real life, but its the grimdark 40k universe and there really doesn't seem to be much common sense going around.
I have always thought bright blue ultramarines and bright red blood angels were a bad idea too

Oh, I loved me some Final Liberation. You're right, the ninety's were great! Hmm, Titans huh? And orks? Ok, I think I can do that. I've been trying to figure out how to magnetize the weapons so they don't look like they have a magnet attached to the Warlord titan's carapace, either on top or underneath.

Thanks for the link, that's got me hyped to play it again!
The plastic Titan weapons fit just fine. The metal weapons are too heavy to stay on without magnets though.

No pictures to post today because I've been busy again, but just a coat or two of paint on the gyrocopters. No sense putting that up as it really doesn't look that much different yet than the other picture. Yellow is such a hard color to paint without streaking.
So I've been thinking about my Epic collection and how cool it would be to have an Epic club to go to for tournaments and just general pick up games so I could start using all of my models again and to introduce people to the game. But I've noticed that the newer version of Epic, the NetEpic Armageddon, allows the use of a few Battlefleet Gothic ships for orbital bombardments as well. That doesn't exist in 2nd edition Epic so it has me contemplating getting into NE Armageddon as well as continuing to play Epic Space Marine/Titan Legions.
Having never played it though, I wonder how easy it is to pick up on. Anyone have any idea?

So I've finally got more progress on these guys. After some very much needed rest I was able to get some more painting done at work. For the most part I like how the blue Iron Eagle Gyrocopter turned out, though I'm thinking of adding some runes or something to it.
But I just can't get the yellow to work. I think I'm gonna have to strip them down again and change them to steel or something.

Thanks for the tip. Guess I'll have to pick some up and give it a try. The yellow in the pic shows streaks of black that don't want to change to yellow, even though I went back and undercoated all of the gyrocopters in white. It looks way worse in person.
Now I have to find a way to do the rest of the squats so they don't look like christmas squats but retain the red, like the trikes.

Yep, I've looked into it. Armageddon seems to be more popular for some reason, but not by much.
So I got blue squadron done.
And one of red squadron.

Thanks SexierThanYou13
So I finished red squadron.
And this is what I have painted so far.
I tried to paint the last three yellow, and even followed some suggestions but I just didn't like the result. So now they are changing to dark green.
First coat...at 1:08 A.M.
And just for your viewing pleasure, a group shot of some of my squats.
I want to re-paint all of this so that it fits with what I have just painted. A daunting prospect, no?

Nah, that's just some of my squat stuff. The infantry were shy and decided to stay in their vehicles for that pic. I'll convince them to get out.
And the group shot again. Another trike and bike squad showed up. along with the Squat Grand Battery.
I also have a bunch of robots that I need to put together. And a few more super heavy vehicles I have to find.

Ok, I remembered that I wanted no green on my Squats so I chose to do my last Iron Eagle squadron in black. They're finally done.
Group photo of all of them.
I'm not sure if I'm gonna do bikes or the Cyclops next. And I still have to do two more trike units.

Well, it's been over a year since I did anything with this thread. In the last year very bad things have happened that I won't go into all of publicly, but part of that bad stuff is learning that I am slowly going blind.
Because of this I haven't really done much painting in over a year. I want to change that now. But with the new condition of my eyes, I am going to start doing slightly larger miniatures until I can get my painting skill back up to where I can do the little epic mini's again.
I've always wanted to do a Titan Legion or two so I think I will begin there. Here is what I have as far as Imperial Titan's go.
I also have another 11 or so beetleback Warlord titan's that I am planning on making into Chaos Titans
However, since my skills are not back up to where I want them just yet, I am beginning by finishing up some models that are partly painted but have not been finished. For this I have decided to make 3 different Legio with these Imperial titans. Legio Ignatum (Fire Wasps), the Titan Legion of Mars itself...they have many titans still in service that were used during the Great Crusade and have been personally blessed by the Emperor of Mankind. They have a black and red color scheme with lots of fire iconography.
The next will be Legio Victorum. A Titan Legion that has a blue and silver color scheme. Their homeworld was originally Mars but after the Horus Heresy they were moved to Triplex Phall. They also have the honor of participating in the Siege of the Imperial Palace during the Horus Heresy.
And third, I plan to do Legio Astramana (Morning Stars). Who's homeworld is Graia
Luckily, I have some partly painted green ones already as you can see in the above pictures. So to help myself get back into painting I will finish up the paint job on these. I began by white lining the edges of one titan with the Corvus Assult Head on it
and I straightened out the white, black, and blue stripes, as well as adding black stripes to the titan that didn't have them. I then put on many layers of yellow to the edges of the Corvus Assult Head titan so he looked like the other two and other than finishing the bases they are done.
So here they are individually
This one has the Corvus Assult Head
This one has a Dragon Weapon Head
And this one has just the normal plastic head that came with the kit.
Here they are together
And now the entire maniple of the Legio Astramana.
I don't plan on basing any of these titans until I can get all of my basing stuff out of storage so I will just be painting them up without basing and then do it all in one go.
Next I plan on doing the Legio Ignatum (Fire Wasps).

So I did some more painting today. I got some first coat lining done on one of my Warhound Titans. By the clean up stage they all should be better looking. This is them with the first coat of black
and this is the first one with some Boltgun Metal lining and a bit of it dry brushed onto the Warhound's head.
So hopefully I can get it to start looking better by the time they are all done.

Thank you Evildrcheese and Llamahead. I'm glad you guys like the way the Titans are turning out. Sadly I only have one Corvus Assult Head and it is painted for the Legio Astramana so I guess that is where it stays.
But I did get some more progress done today. I finally got all of the lining of the silver done on the three Legio Ignatum Titans.
Now for the second coat of black to clean up some splashes of the silver and then it will be on to putting on the stripes and flames, and hopefully I can start putting banners and purity seals on all of the titans. Though I may wait for the banners and purity seals after I have completed their bases. I'm not sure yet on that.

That is not a separate game. It is simply a box of Beetleback Warlord titans that were made so you could buy extra titans for Adeptus titanicus without having to re buy the whole Adeptus Titanicus boxed set game to get them. It came with a few templates printed on the side because that is what GW used to do back then.
It's cool that whoever you got them from on BT decided to throw in the rules for Adeptus Titanicus for you though.
