I'm planning on adding a couple of Leman Russ' to my Space Wolves army, and as I can't bring myself to play unbound, I need to add in a unit of two of IG Vets. Cadian's seem boring to me, and Catachan are too rediculously Ramboesque for me to want to use them.

My plan has been to use Empire State Handgunners as my Guardsmen. My fear with using these out of the box is that they would appear to be too fantasy like and not fit 40k enough. So I'm currently considering using the Skitarii troop box set, and kitbashing this with the state troops box. My plan is to use the Dragoon heads, Ranger(?) Gun, and the rest state troops.

How easy would this be to accomplish?

I offer the alternative of Vostroyans, who'd look pretty damn awesome with your wolves.

I considered Vostroyan's, but I would much rather avoid using metal where possible

I've converted skinny-legged Empire Militia before into Necromunda minis, and I'd say they'd look out of place for Guard. There's also a distinct lack of shoulder pad bulk, and they'd end up just looking like Fantasy figs.

There's a fantastic conversion with Empire Greatswords and various bitz (Google will bring it up) to make cool looking Guardsmen. You could simplify the bitz needed by just using Greatsword bodies and legs with Cadian heads, arms and weapons?

Also, if you use some Empire torso on 40K Guard legs they appear too short. A thin piece of styrene tube makes them the right height again (see Stormtroopers in my plog linked below).

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"
