So Captains and Chapter Masters come stock with a 4++ due to their Iron Halos. Is buying them a Storm Shield for 15 pts really worth the investment?

no... buying the Shield Eternal though, is a must in nearly every army

It's worth it if you're taking an unwieldy weapon to help you stay alive to swing..

Probably better on a Captain because you'll save considerable points compared to a Master with the relic shield.

The better your save is, the exponentially better increasing it becomes - going from a 6+ to a 5+ is largely irrelevant, 4+ to 3+ is good, 3+ to 2+ is amazing.

A storm shield isn't a bad buy paired with a power fist (or thunder hammer) - it'll probably keep you alive long enough to swing, and hit hard. The relic version is better (kind of inevitably) but if you want a cheap captain with generic equipment rather than a 200+ point chapter master it's good enough.

You'll need to deal 6 AP1/2 wounds to put down a Captain with Iron Halo (on Average) The Storm shield bumps that to 9 AP1/2 wounds. On a Chapter Master the odds are 8 with Iron Halo, 12 with Storm shield. High wound count models benefit exponentially from upgrades like this. 15points is cheap.

My IG Company Commander managed to solo kill a Chappie with a Storm Shield over the course of 3 turns (taking only one wound in the process).
The more I think about it, the more epic it is.

The Chappie had a Power Sword + Storm Shield + Jump Pack.
My Company Commander had a Power Sword + Plasma Pistol

What are the odds of that?

I dismantled one of my Captains and took off his Storm Bolter and gave him a Storm Shield. He has a relic blade, so he isn't missing out on any attacks, but gets the better save. Also, since I play Crimson Fists, if I use their Warlord Traits from White Dwarf, I stand a pretty good chance of getting him Eternal Warrior. He always runs with a Command Squad so he gets FNP from an Apothecary.

I was using Chappie as a cute way to refer to the Chapter Master. I can see how that could be misconstrued as a Chaplain.

I laughed so hard when I read that. DakkaDakka does NOT mess around!! I do see both sides to the mistake. From what I can tell when you are using a cute name for someone, it's chap. Like he was a young chap. Therefore, the "cuter" way would be "chappy". Chappie is really close to Chaplain.

10/10 still laughing at how that panned out. XD
