I recently started playing Orks and wanted to try out the "Ork Warband" formation from the Ork Codex. Naturally, I'd want to take Ghazghkull as the Warlord, since he gets a buttload of bonuses on a turn he calls a waagh, making him awesomer if you can call a waagh every turn through stampede.
BUT: Ork Warband specifies that you need to take a "Warboss", and does not allow you to take Ghazghkull as the warboss. His rules also don't state that you can take him in place of a warboss or anything. Same with the "Green Tide" Formation from Waagh! Ghazghkull, which also has the stampede special rule.

Can you take him in an Ork Warband, or a Green Tide, as a warboss?

It says Warboss, not Ghazghkull Thraka, so unfortunately no.

No, Ghaz is now a Lord of War. You can't just substitute him for a normal warboss.

Maybe not the best use of points - but you could still take the formation with its warboss as warlord to waaagh every turn and take Ghazghkull in a separate detachment.

In this case, your whole army (every detachment) is affected by the every turn Waaagh - but Ghazghkull will never benefit from his 2+ invuln rule because it is not him who is calling the Waaagh

Yes you need to take a warboss, however you can also take Ghaz as a LOW AND make him your warlord. There is nothing saying the warboss HAS to be your warlord.

well the ork warband is a formation not a detachment so in order to get ghazghkull you would have to go unbound or fill out a CAD.

anyway the point of the warband is to waagh every turn. taking ghazghkull as the warlord would prevent you from waaghing every turn. the formation warboss has to be the warlord to get that benefit.
