Hello everyone,
New to casting and still only at the sculpting stage. I would like to make some tealight dragon candle holders but can't seem to find out if I need a specific heat resistant resin? I have seen lots of resin, tealight holders on ebay, with and without glass inserts. I would really love some advice about this as I'm half way through sculpting a big dragon head but now I'm not sure wether to try and turn it into a trinket box instead..... Advice would be greatly appreciated!

Apologies for not being able to offer any direct help myself, but you might get some faster replies if you change the title to include the heat resistant resin question. Makes it easier for anyone who might know to see the thread.

Other than that, welcome to Dakka

Chances are good that you would not need a special resin as it will not be in direct contact with the flame. The heat of the molten wax would not be enough to deform the resin even with prolonged exposure. For example, my favored resin is from Alumilite and is the RC3 resin. It has a pouring viscosity less than water, so it gives extremely crisp castings. It is easy to work with as it is equal parts mixed A and B. It will certainly withstand a candle as it can take the heat and pressures involved with the vulcanising process for making rubber molds without deforming or breaking.

You say that I am crazy. I say that you are right!

Speaking from personal experience of having a resin candleholder go up in flames, I would disagree...

I have no idea if there is a specific 'safe' resin for this sort of application, but I stopped lighting candles in anything resin after that little event.
