Hey guys new to the game and need some help putting together a 1000 pt army for the weekends. Here's what I'm thinking.
HQ:
(125)
Chaos Lord -> MoN, VotLW, Combi-flamer, Power Fist, and Melta bomb.
Troops:
(207)
Cultists x 29 ->14 CCW/Pisto/ + 12 Autogun + 3 Flamer. MoN.
Cultist Champ -> Shotgun, MoN
(185)
Plague Marines x 4 -> 2 with Flamer, VotLW, Rhino
Plague Champ -> Combi-flamer, Melta bomb.
(185)
Plague Marines x 4 -> 2 with Flamer, VotLW, Rhino
Plague Champ -> Combi-flamer, Melta bomb.
NOW, here is where I have a tough time deciding on Heavy Support.
5 Havocs with 2 autocannons or lascannons and 2 missile launchers? (to be ready for air)
Or 3 Oblits?
Any shredding of my list is much appreciated! This is my first real attempt at a list and need to learn a lot! Thanks in advance.

Havoc Launchers add something for the Rhinos to do. Makes them a little killy against average troops and for only 12pts I really like them.
Plague Marines are bad at melee honestly. Keep them to squads of 5 and give them 2 Plasma or Melta. Done. Flamers arent that important unless your group runs tons of Horde style armies.
I dont own Havoc Marines and even then 2 Missile shots arent even going to take out a flyer. I do own 6 Oblits and love them so my vote is for them taken in 3 seperate squads of 1.
Never mark or upgrade cultists. They are only there to hold a backfield objective. The only "upgrade" is to take more cultists. But even then they arent actually good at killing anything or tarpitting. Spending more on them than your Plague marines seems a terrible idea.
The Lord is just sort of there, no retinue to roll with. Give him a bike, sigil, Lightening Claw, and a group of spawn to roll with.
VOTLW isnt very good. Take it if your group runs constant SM armies but honestly the LD boost only helps Obliterators who run in groups bigger than 1

For the havocs if you're going to take heavy weapons on them then just take 4 of the same heavy weapon, it will make the squad more effective overall.

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

Havoc should all run the same weapons, being specialize helps because they can only fire at a single target. If using Havocs, most take autocannons.
But even then, the versitility of obliterators is hard to pass up. They can take multiple targets depanding on the situation. If you do take them, take them in multiples of one as oppose to a squad of two or three. More targets.
Diddo on the plasma plagues and naked cultists.
Bike is the optimal loadout for the Lord but if you don't have the model you'll have to change it up. Instead you could run an unmarked sorcerer and roll on biomancy, stick him in the cultist blob and rush him forward though expect to take casualties. If not you could drop the cultists entirely and run him with some basic CSMs in a think depending on your models

Tzeentch Veteran Marine with Psychic Potential

Plague Marines are best with Meltaguns or Plasma guns as upgrades. The flamers really don't do much that they can't do themselves in close combat. Plague Marines actually ARE good at close combat because not only is their Toughness 5 and Feel No Pain great for surviving most melee attacks, but they also have access to Blight Grenades, which count as Defensive grenades, which cause Blind when thrown. If you blind an enemy unit, they have BS1 and WS1 for the turn. Since your Plague Marines have WS4, the enemy will only hit you on 5s and you'll hit them on 3s. Not to mention their poisoned weapons are great against tough enemies.
The Chaos Lord has a regular combi-flamer... if you want to give him a flamer, give him the Burning Brand of Skalathrax instead. Not only is it a better flamer with AP3, it is also a Torrent flamer so you can hit even more guys. As others have said, if you go with Mark of Nurgle on your Chaos Lord, you may as well get a Bike as well which makes him Toughness 6 and very hard to wound.
Obliterators are way better than Havocs. You can kill an entire Havoc squad with a single Plasma Cannon. The Oblits will also have more weapon variety and they can deep strike right behind a tank before opening up with Meltas at close range.

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions
|
if possible can we have a list of your models? that will help us if this is it then here we go:
chaos lord is fearless so dont bother with votlw then take off the combi flamer give him termi armour with lc and pf or chain fist. but a biker lord with mon is soooo much stronger. always go lc + pf
cultists are cheap, so dont give them a flamer or a shotgun or anything keep them barebones it might be better to have 3X10 squads
plague marines are garbage with flamers, go with melta combi-melta and melta bombs dont put votlw. keep the rhinos cheap no havoc no nothing they will die in three seconds the minute you move up
always always always take the oblits, they are so good in a crappy codex, if you want to anti air then its called d3 s7 vector strikes from a helldrake.
if you dont have models then this is what i suggest :
biker lord pf+lc mon slaughteres horns daemonheart (from crimson slaughterer)
biker sorcerer
cultists
biker squad x4
heldrake
oblits
msu plague marines

I would run oblitz with MoN and kill some upgrades in places to get typhus and something for him to walk with such as mutas or terminaters. Just a couple though. All in all I would run with as much MoN because repetition is best in play.
