Hello,

Me and a buddy are starting to get into bolt action and we ordered the D-day firefight starter box. What else should we look into getting? Do we need the army books? I'll be playing US and he is taking the Krauts.

Thanks for any help.

You don't *need* the army books; basic lists and rules are in the main rule book.

They are only like $25 each though and provide a lot more depth so I'd recommend them (you get a free LE mini if you order them direct from Warlord too).

All you should need to get going is dice and a tape measure. Then you can go nuts on all your new plastic crack

You'll also need another squad of germans, like a MG42 and a officer to lead them. You'll also need an officer for your American's, either a tank or a AT gun and that's pretty much it if you want to get basic full platoon.

But you should be up and playing using the stuff in the box initially.

Awesome. So we can get a feel for it with the starter and kinda go from there then.

hey Hawkeye888,

Bolt Action is a really fun minis game based on WW2 - you guys are sure to have some great times. I wrote up a "what's next" kind of recommendation for another Dakka member who also bought D-Day Firefight. Here's the link to the discussion! http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/663359.page scroll down a few posts and you'll see the ideas I presented.

I have the US army book and I feel it doesn't add much at all. The specialty units aren't great, playing out of the book is fine unless you want to play with Veteran Shermans. The German book doesn't open up fantastic options either.

If you like being spoiled for choice and enjoy the makeup of different units during the war, I say they will be more than worth it though.

I'd recommend for both forces: a transport, a medium mortar, some kind of howitzer, and a tank. You should also try to make MMG's and snipers (if you like them) out of the standard infantry kits.

I would recommend your Kraut friend pick up the plastic German grenadier box. Much better than the old late-war German kit. You should have plenty of infantry, but I'd recommend picking up some rangers or airborne if you want another squad. There's rumors of plastic Screaming Eagles if you are inclined to wait, like myself.
