I suppose it makes little sense to have the illustrations in crayon. it's not like there's a child somewhere in the 41st millennium taking illustration commissions with his mediocre-at-best crayon skills.

I don't know. I tend to think that people would draw with what is available to them. There wouldn't be formal art education for most imperials

(To be fair, my crayon pictures are done at A3 size and shrunk down. They're detailed because they're actually huge in real life.)
