Is it by number of models on the field? Total number of wounds? Some other number?

Thanks in advance

By how much space is on the table. I am being serious by the way, that is how armies are limited.

I was more thinking along the lines of listed not limited. Like, when you go to play a 40K game, you may start out by saying, "I have about 3000 points worth of Dark Angels with me. What number of points are you thinking?" Wondering how you list/say the same kind of thing in AoS the days. Is it more like, "I have about 20 Vampire Counts models with me" or is it more like, "I have about 35 wounds worth of Vampire Counts with me."

Thanks

There isnt anything like that in the rules.

You can try limit it by models or wounds or make up a points system.

Most people are doing one of the above.

Either Warscrolls, Models, or Wounds

Depending on the System both players agree apon.

Me and the guy I split the starter with are going by Battalion Warscrolls for now.

Warscrolls list the minimum number of models that can be in a unit (usually the number sold in a box), but outside of unique characters, they don't tend to have an upper limit. So yes, you could field a unit of a thousand skeletons if you wanted, if you had the table space, a thousand skeleton models, and someone willing to play against you with that sort of army. Some of the tournament rules have limited the number of total models you can field (like 100 models total), but there are no limitations imposed in the Four Pages or most warscrolls.

Wounds are what most people apply that by.

The Azyr system's points can make it pretty easy if you and your friends go by that system.

Otherwise, you can just bring your main army* and have you and your opponent place units on the field until you feel the game will be what you're most comfortable with. (A few units for a quick battle, lots of units for a large fight, etc.)

So really it's "did you bring your skirmish/battle army?".

*by main army I don't mean entire collection but a general overall force with good synergies and can be used in masse or use only a fraction of that force and still be viable.

[Edit] Oh, I forgot. Though it's been mentioned, units on the warscrolls are also used with the + part forgotten. So two state troops warscrolls would be 20 models.

This is not something that is set in stone, and different tournaments and scenarios have different rules. For instance, I've seen tournaments that limited the number of warscrolls you could bring, while others another limits the total number of models in your army pool that you select from at the beginning of each match. A recently posted example had you count up wounds in both players' armies, and gave advantages to the player with a lower "martial prowess" score. In the Four Pages, you just take turns setting up units until you both decide you have enough to play.

Since there is no officially set limitation, you are free to set your own however you'd like. Some people have created point systems and made them available to others. Personally, I just bring my collection of models and pick my army once the scenario has been chosen.

Our weekly league has been using Warscroll count, usually 6-10.

We sometimes do SDK point system though and that works good too.

The playgroup has about a dozen players and no one has tried to bring any game breaking combos or huge armies as everyone wants to have a challenging game

In the core rules there is no limit. So just discuss with your opponent what sort of game you want, has worked for me with pick up games so far.

For the many different battleplans there are different limits in place. Some have specific orders of battle like the starter set battle plans. Other have model limits (such as the School League rules, or the up coming Throne of Skulls pack).

Some just state that the attacker need have a certain % of more models.

Some don't need limits, such as the Convergence of Fate battleplan which is for 4 players and the idea is the strongest gets picked on until they are no longer the strongest :-p

There are lots of fun ways to play so explore the content!

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)
