Here's my fluff for my Imperial Guard Regiment. Any feedback, comments and criticism would be great! I do need help with the location of the homeplanet in the wider imperium too. Also bring me up on anything that need correcting fluff/lore wise, names on cities and continents are yet to be made.
Regiment Name: Rus Rurian 1st Regiment (7th Legio)
Homeworld: Rus Ruris
Homeworld Type: Agri and Recruiting World
Homeworld Fluff
Rus Ruris was rediscovered in 986.M30, in a relatviely remote part of the Imperium (need help with a location) as is a relatively large planet for it's type with an massive concentration of agricultural settlements and towns and a fairly high population (again for an agri world) of 100 million. The planet itself is made up of two large continents that makes up 40% of the planets surface which is separated by a channel, the larger of which makes up 90% of the planets landmass. The only two large cities that are on the planet are both on the larger continent, the first being a capitol that boasts a respectable space port and the second being a factory, city that produces agricultural materials, most of which being tractors. The planet was already united with a democratic government with trade relations with other nearby planets, noticeably already selling extremely large amounts of excess food and tractors, although a local alcoholic beverage know locally as 'umpy or 'der is smuggled off planet (despite being banned on most planets apart from it's home planet). The only disorder was around harvest periods or when 'umpy supply was dangerously low, raiding was also a non issue due to the planets obscure location and all disorder was usually resolved peacefully or by local milita. A few home regiments were fielded anyway, most being remarkably small numbering only 2,000 men, with old autogun style weaponry. These regiments were called legio's and no more than 10 were in existence. Due to this fact the planet entered the imperium peacefully, and apart from a planetary governor now being the head of state, most of it's activity was the same. As the agricultural material and vehicles is produced on such a high volume the planets entire tithe is paid in such material and no manpower was removed. An interesting note on discovery was despite it's position, the planetary language, while technically lower gothic, was incredibly close to high gothic, simply with the first few letters and/or pronunciation missing off certain words.
By the 38th millennium, Rus Ruris had escaped most the horrors of war and the Horus Heresy the planet was relatively untouched by imperial cult, due to it's location, with the emperor mostly merging with the planets own native god (of fertility). Another note is the belief in a machine spirit does not exists on Rus Ruris. However in 865.M38 this all changed forever.
Invasion of Rus Ruris
A splinter fleet from a WAAAGH stumbled upon the planet, making planet-fall the orks were expecting a warm-up fight before heading back to the main fleet, initially they where extremely disappointed. The planet was in a stage of disarray, The small armies where spread out across the planet with only 5 managing to make it back to the capital. Two were stationed near the Factory City and the other Three were on the smaller, less populated continent training. Town after town were pillaged, the local milita not equipped to deal with the invaders and the military too weak to do anything other than fall back. Columns of refugees snaked the continent seeking refuge.
The Planetary Governor Ordered the fortification of the two cities, ordering all nearby citizen to arms themselves and head for the closest city. The forces by the smaller continents set up ferry's with the planets native Fishing Trawlers, guarding the beachhead on the other continent, and sending civilians to the other which had yet to be targeted by the orks. Slowly but shortly defences where readied, the cities full, with all remaining civilians heading towards the smaller continent. By now the planets Astropath was sending distress calls far into the imperium.
The Ork Warboss, felt the best fight would be had at the capitol, once done, he thought they may as well head back to their ships and return to the WAAAGH for a better fight. What he did not presume was the Capitol was now in effect a fortress with every man woman and child armed with whatever weapons they could find. As the Capitol was the planets sole spaceport and also home to the Governors Palace, it was the most important position on the planet for it's continued survival. Roads were blocked off by buildings purposefully collapsed, whole streets and squares had been mined, snipers positioned in every tower or church. The Siege lasted 5 years, in which time it had drawn all the attention of the orks who headed for the city in droves. The city finally fell in 750871.M38, however the Warboss fell during the final assault on the Governors Palace as did most of the toughest orks during the last 5 years. The amount of bloodshed and loss of the warboss scattered the orks into smaller warbands and tribes, with most the ships being remade into other vehicles, for the protracted siege.
23 years after the initial invasion in 888.M38 it was noticed in the administratum that the planets tithes had not been received, upon further investigation and in attempt to contact the planets Astropath, the distress message was finally received as the mysteries of the warp had delayed it. Presuming the planet already overrun and burning, it was decided to only send a single regiment to scout the planet and see if they orks had moved on. What they found was a remarkable testament to the Rus Rurian people. The 5 year siege had given time for the Factory City to further fortify and convert their tractors into very basic tanks that resembled their original vehicles rather closely. The Small Continent was now a fortress island, with the planets sole remaining food production facilities, with armoured convoys supplying food to the Factory City, and arms to the Islanders. The Siege had been so bloody it had been etched into the local ork psyche, with only a few brave orks entering the city, with even fewer returning. Rumours circled both the human and orks of snipers in the city, with noises resembling screams often being heard in the night in an otherwise deserted and desolate city. The orks had also yet to be unified under a local warboss and their numbers had been greatly thinned by the local population who were now fully equipped and battle-hardened. The legio's had exploded in size, to around 12 regiments of around 650,000 each, however out of the original regiments, only the 7th legio remained. The population of the planet however had fallen to just over 10 million and the main continent was a mess of ruins, battlefields and mud. The orks also still vastly outnumbered the defenders, however after discovering the mind boggling defence of the planet, it was relieved and the ork presence was removed from the planet.
Now while the Planet still provides agricultural vehicles as part of it's tithe, it's ecosystem was ravaged by warfare, it's new main form of tithe is now it's fighting men and women selected from the best of the best. Currently there are 15 Regiments serving in the imperial Guard.
Current Rus Rurian Culture
Due to the ork invasion, and apparent abandonment by the imperium and the eventual rescue, Rus Rurians have mixed feelings concerning the Imperium. As such many icons representing the imperium are not present on many pieces of equipment. The two opposing side in their culture is one of undying love for their saviour and the other of anger over the inability for the imperium to help the rurians when they needed it the most. This disagreement within the Rurians themselves has been known to cause many heated debates even within the same families. Commissars as such are very unpopular in their Regiments, as are summery executions rather common. Coincidently the accident rate of commisars is rather high, most notably they often are equipped with extremely faulty grenades by the Departmento Munitorum, something the Munitorum is unabel to find the root cause of. One of the main survivors of the war was the highly addictive 'umpy, which is now heavily consumed by the majority of the population, it's not unusual to find it on the planet where Rurain Regiments are stationed, and often used as dutch courage before battles despite it's legal status or ban during active duty.
Due to their isolation they have a great distrust of mutants or sub-humans, as such they especially distrust psykers, which they view quite rightly, as a form of witchcraft and they are highly xenophobic which also includes incredibly disrespectful remarks and nicknames for orgryns and ratlings who they view as closer to alien than human. Their history with orks also holds a deep seated hatred for the greenskin and also any other xeno race!
The 1st Rus Rurain Regiment (7th Legio)
Motto: Remember Rus Ruris
Rurian Nickname: 7th Legio
External Nickname: Farmboys
The 7th Legio was quickly upon liberation, reformed into the First Regiment, due to it's origins, most equipments is old, if not ancient. New recruits, rather gruesomely, usually attain their equipment from the soldier they are replacing. To Rurians however this has become a tradition brought out of necessity during the invasion. Also equipment given to units for specific roles or campaigns is often retained long after their original use has disappeared. Because of the Rurian basic equipment being produced locally and their mixed feelings regarding the Imperium, it is not unsual to see troops not displaying imperial regalia, although no trooper in service of the Astra Militarum would be stupid enough to voice their feelings.
Rus Rurians generally are masters of defending positions and using make-shift fortification in the field, they also are extremely proficient at conventional warfare and armoured thrusts usually using armoured vehicle and tanks. Very few if any of their original vehicles remain, mostly being replaced by Leman Russes and Chimeras. Because of it's origins and large size compared to many other regiments, they often split their main force to be used a centuries of 10,000 men. Because of this, a rare trait of the 1st Rus Rurian is that their own Armoured and Artillary support comes from within the regiment itself. However, the 7th Legio is the sole Rus Rurian regiment not to be reformed or reduced greatly by losses, all other Regiments follow the normal imperial composition, out of the currently serving 9 other regiments, 7 are infantry regiments, one is an artillery regiment and the remaining regiment is a tank regiment.
The 1st itself also has many other oddities, for example troopers and heraldry often refers to it as the 7th Legio, despite it's official title being the 1st Rus Rurian Regiment. This causes no end of confusion for other units it has to deploy alongside, even once resulting in a commander believing he had another extra army! This has resulted in the Regiment system skipping the 7th, however there is a rumour of the 7th Rus Rurian rebelling during a 'umpy shortage and was eventually purged. Because to their beginnings and language, they are also often teased by other soldiers of the imperium who call them farmboys, which when mixed with their alcoholic 'umpy has caused many brawls that are sometimes so large they are boarder-lining revolts, however foreign troopers are still more than happy to obtain 'umpy.... often for a price. The remaining tradition is the naming system soldiers use for their vehicles, of which soldiers will often name after their pets or sweethearts.
