One person was fatally shot and two others were wounded in a dispute over a dice game on the campus of Tennessee State University in Nashville late Thursday, police said.

A university police dispatcher said the campus was on lockdown as of 1:00 a.m. (2:00 a.m. ET), but would not comment further.

Police responded to a call of shots fired just before 11:00 p.m. (midnight ET), according to the Nashville Police Department's Tonya Stone.

The victims were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Stone said.

It wasn't like there were two guys sitting along playing dice amongst themselves. Dice games become a public spectacle with a crowd around the players hyping them up. I've seen a few dice games on the street in my day, and never once was it a surprise if someone pulled a weapon or came to blows.

Here's a thought, if there are dudes from off campus playing dice on school grounds....call the cops and have them removed. Disrupting the academic milieu with gambling is generally against all school bylaws. AND I WONDER WHY!

Based on where Tennessee state is and the fact that the person killed wasn't a student, I think it's going to end up being a gambling debt gone bad over alleyway craps.

Yeah, that area of town is a no-go zone for me. At least after dark. This could have happened anywhere around there, not just on campus.

North Precinct detectives are investigating Thursday night’s gunfire in an outside courtyard of Tennessee State University that claimed the life of one person and sent two others to the hospital.

The deceased is believed to be a 19-year-old non-TSU student. His identity is expected to be confirmed later today. Two 18-year-old female students were wounded as innocent passersby. One of them has been treated and released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The other is in stable condition at Vanderbilt and is expected to fully recover. A third 18-year-old female student received a very minor graze and did not require medical treatment.

The investigation to this point shows that a dispute erupted over a dice game in the outside courtyard of the Floyd-Payne Campus Center. The dispute escalated into a physical fight. Witnesses reported that gunshots were suddenly heard, prompting the 10:52 p.m. call to TSU police. It was reported that several students saw the fight taking place and recorded it on their cellphones. Those with cellphone images are urged to share them with MNPD detectives who are working to apprehend the person(s) who indiscriminately placed people in danger by firing shots. Anyone with information can relay it to the police department, anonymously if need be, by calling Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Persons can also send an electronic tip by texting the word “CASH” along with the message to 274637 (CRIMES), or online at www.nashvillecrimestoppers.com.

This shooting was isolated to the outside courtyard. There was no known threat to students in dorms or elsewhere on campus. The MNPD’s crime scene team did recover a pistol in the darkness while processing the immediate area.

More like "OMG someone pissed me off! I'm so scared/out of control/undisciplined I will start using my fists". The cowardice and stupidity happens when someone starts a fight rather than acting like an adult.
