Caves of Ice by Sandy Mitchell - its one of the Commissar Cain novels.
The Commissar Cain novels carry through multiple books, but each is a standalone. Also, he faces a variety of enemies, not Necrons.
Gaunts Ghosts novels carry through multiple novels. They have no Necrons though.

Gaunt's Ghosts follow an Imperial Guard regiment throguh their crusade to reclaim the Sabbat Worlds from Chaos.
Cain follows the adventures of a cowardly Commissar. He does encounter Necrons a couple of times.
Best series is Eisenhorn / Ravenor though.

Yes and no - Cain considers himself cowardly - but no one else does and all his deeds tend to contradict that. Its one of the inherent contradictions about him - he thinks he is a coward but its pretty clear that he is not. Although he is based partly on Flashman - they are very very different characters.
He encounters Necrons quite a few times and Caves of Ice is a good read / starting point tbh if you want Necrons.

Oh, no. Cain is a coward - he's just a pragmatic one. Everything he does is to enhance his own chances of survival. The only times he does something heroic are when the only other option is dying even more horribly, at least in the earlier books.

Hey, so on Black Library they have 2 omnibuses. The first with the first three novels and the second with the next three novels.
They are $15 each but the 7th, 8th, and 9th novels are $25 each.
Do the omnibuses actually have all three novels like they say? or is it just an abridged or shortened version?

Nah I don't buy that and even the books author says he is not that sure - Amberley in universe says he does not give himself nay where near the amount of credit (although she is biased as his lover ). His cowardice often results in him challenging people to single combat (or Chaos marines) or performing something actually death defying rather than simply hiding. I think this sums it nicely:
Likewise, Cain views himself as a cowardly figure of little worth, often wondering why various enemy generals are so fixated on defeating him—leaving us completely ignorant (until Vail points it out) of the morale boost caused by the mere presence of a genuine "Hero of the Imperium", much less any acts of heroism that may be forthcoming. In the end, Vail's limited interjections indicate that she believes Cain is too hard on himself; in the foreword to "Fight or Flight", author Sandy Mitchell admitted that he himself is not sure if Cain is truly a coward, or a genuine hero with a massive inferiority complex or a case of impostor syndrome.

I don't know about the Cain Omnibuses, but in the Gaunt's Ghosts and Night Lords Omnibusses, the short stories filled in minor events that occurred between novels. By comparison, the Eisenhorn omnibus short stories were much more self-contained.

Well they are all part of the greater story but the "Cain Archive" is not published (either in universe or by by Black Library) in chronolgical order but rather is a selection of linked and interesting adventures. Quite often characters re-ocurr and Cain is stronglyl linked with the Valhalan regiments although he later attens an impressive status with the Talarians.

Gaunt's Ghosts, from my experience.
The Founding Omnibus is a pretty good introduction, but I hesitate to call any of the books in it truly great. The individual short stories can be fun though, and Necropolis is a fun over the top read.
The Saint has some good and some bad books. Honour Guard and Straight Silver are both on the good end, Straight Silver being the best of the four. Guns of Tanith is alright, but Sabbat Martyr is the worst book in the whole series
The Lost Omnibus is excellent from beginning to end. Traitor General, His Last Command, The Armour of Contempt and Only In Death are all great books that really benefit from being about a hundred pages longer than any of the earlier books.
The Victory only has two books so far, Blood Pact and Salvation's Reach. They're pretty good, but not as good as The Lost.

Currently reading it, near the end of Necropolis. Have to agree. Fun, with memorable characters, and genuinely awesome/touching moments but not truly great. A lot of repetition when it comes to how they win engagements (tube charges -> complete collapse of enemy war effort).

My hands. They, too, are golden. |
