Subject: Destroyer heavy guass upgrade worth it?

Hi Dakka,
I now possess a full Destroyer cult and have been working it into my Necron list. I plan on running 1-2 Canoptek Harvests and a rather large destroyer cult with a min reclamation legion.
Are the heavy destroyers worth it? ATM its 180 points in my list, and I am wondering if the 6 s9 ap2 shots are worth it, sure they have PE, and they can reroll all wounds/pens. Aside from wraithknights and helping with 2+ armor, it doesnt help with much. All in all, think the Heavy destroyers are a worthy addition?

Yes. I would run a 3 man block of heavies and then the 3x3 man blocks of regular destroyers for the the cult. That way the heavy guass can all go at AT/MC/GMC and the regular destroyers can nuke marines/MC.
EDIT. To be clear I would not mix heavy destroyers and the regular destroyers together because they usually want to shoot at different things.

Absolutely worth it. It allows you to still engage units if you're not quite in range yet.

Love em. I put the max number of Heavy Destroyers in my Destroyer Cult without fail. I do mix and match. It's very very nice to have a long(er) range, high-test shot in the mix while you're Gauss Cannon Destroyers are getting in range, as Slayer-Fan attests (though I can see the merit in the other point of view, as well).

I was running a large cult. 3x 2+1 and a 3x heavy. That is a lot of lascannon fire that has a great chance to hit, and a pretty great chance to do something to whatever it shoots. The mix of heavy/standard wasn't ever an issue. for target priority. Sometimes it worked out better. As gauss can hurt everything.

Always try to get the maximum number of Heavies in a Cult. They are the best thing about that formation.
Though, that being said, I've had good results from running a partially mixed cult: Destroyer Lord
5x Destroyers
2x Destroyers + 1x Heavy
2x Destroyers + 1x Heavy
3x Heavies
D.Lord goes with something that needs PE.
5 regulars focus on deleting MEQ, usually by aggressive forward push or deep strike
3 Heavies hang back and focus on armor
The two mixed units hang in the middle, advancing far enough up on both flanks that they can support either of the specialist units if they need help finishing off a target.

Agreed. Destroyers are a very good thing to field, and provide serious firepowers. But mixed squads seem like a bad plan to me.

I run 3x 2+1 to support the Tomb Blades & Monolith as a central spearhead in my 2250 point lists. I find the mixture provides one of the swiss army knife options that our codex otherwise lacks
Brilliant firepower, and between the three in a unit, they can usually bring down anything. I had two units assist a Flyer & a Barge bring down a Chaos Knight in my last game, so I would definately reccomend the heavies, and as personal preference put them as mixed squads.

If I could get away with it, I'd play a cult with 3 units of Heavies, 2 units of regular Destroyers.
As is, the best I can usually hope for is running a double cult if points allow (but that would typically leave barely anything for the rest of the army, so it's not very practical).
Granted, I could just run a CAD like that, but then I miss out on those sweet sweet pen rerolls.

Destroyers are in the top three units in the necron codex, and in their destroyer cult formation are even better.
Get them next to a salker for added effect. Especially the heavies.
I will be getting three more soon with the heavy upgrades - so I can run 3x4, 3H.
