I thought I would start another thread as the last one was for a Kick starter, whereas now I have decided to go for a 'traditional' release method. Its still a fantasy skirmish game, set in a world of intrigue, but now there is no need to wait to see it...
After a slight delay, we have finally been able to go live with the site. The rules, game cards, and even paper dolls for proxying in games are all free, so please give it a try.
It is merely a one on one model game right now, but its a lot of fun! There is a collection of fluff on there too for people that want to know more about the world. I will be uploading a number of short stories over the next few weeks to further flesh it out.
best of luck with it, please do keep us/the thread updated
The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

I will sort out some comparison scale shots on the site fairly soon. I have compared the models to some of my own 28mm heroic scale stuff and the sizes are pretty similar. More of a difference is the scale of the heads and hands - because I like 'true' scale rather than what I call 'gorillascale' with massive hands and heads. Even then, its not that great a difference.

I would, but that's just me, really.
I can still see myself buying Vushka at 30mm because you know... bears can be big! As for the rest, I think they will just stand out a bit too much from my Mordheim warbands
Comparison scale shots will of course be very welcome
"Let them that are happy talk of piety; we that would work our adversary must take no account of laws."http://back2basing.blogspot.pt/
I would expect 2mm to not be that big of a difference when they're in hand. The lack of super-sized hands, feet, and heads would be the biggest departure from "heroic" proportions. For me, 30mm is possibly okay (scale shots would be very helpful) past that is where I tend to draw the line for humanoids. With monsters and beasts and whatnot there's a bit more wiggle room.

Given how bloated many 'popular' "28mm" miniatures are in reality, I kind of thuoght your '30mm' miniatures would look just fine mixed in most places.
Still, scale shots next to other popular ranges will be greatly appreciated!
Some really nice stories, I haven't gotten into the rules themselves. Also, I may just be deficient in caffeine...but the story says Luther lost his left arm and was gifted one of energy. It looks like in the pic his right arm is energy
"Orkses never lost a battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"
I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.
It's an old version of the story that the sculptor clearly didn't read I did correct it before the site went live but must have done it again for some reason and copy/pasted from an older version... I will amend it later.
I am glad you are enjoying it so far. The story is very important to me so you can expect a lot more to come. There will be background to the world but also a linked narrative in parts that tells the story of the first wave of the game.
I got a demo game of this last night, and it was good fun. The rules are simple to pick up if you've got any wargaming experience, and it looked like there should be plenty of tactical choices, with lots of variety between the different wizards. The models look great in person, and I wouldn't worry too much about scale even if you want to put them along side GW models. The hands and head will look a bit small beside GW humans, but only because they're a lot more realistic. Next to any other ranges they'll fit in perfectly.
I thought I would share some images of the models near ones from other manufacturers to give a better idea of scale.
Also just to let you guys know starting tomorrow and ending Sunday evening, there will be a sale of up to 20% on the Roots of Magic miniatures over at my site:
We have just uploaded a demonstration game for The Roots of Magic here:
We hope that this makes learning to play a bit easier as you follow the players through the game. Its longer than most games will be simply because we explain a lot as we go along - and as the game was very close and went the full 8 turns.
The rules, cards, and paper dolls for proxying are available from our website: http://therootsofmagic.com/
I hope you will agree that the final product shows that the sculpts aren't just good on screen! More images and details can be found on the website and our Facebook page.
We had a very good Salute and this has allowed me to begin work on the next wave of models. I am delighted to display the first of these: Suleiman, the Thrice-Cursed.
The casting will be done in the next few weeks and I'm hoping to be able to release this model during Q3 this year.
I have demoed the game to many people and the community, while still in its infancy, is steadily growing. Check out the game and the models on the website. The rules and game cards are still free, and I will be adding a new scenario in the next week to the downloads section. I remain committed to adding lots more free content whether it is rules, fluff, or anything else to do with the game and the world it is set in.
I get some during this Salute, I love that dark mage with skulls flying around.
I don't know if I will use for your game, but for sure for Frostgrave
Glad to hear that you like him! I am very proud of the quality of the product. I agree it will make a great model for something like Frostgrave.
I would still recommend that you check out the rules for the Roots of Magic though (of course I would) as they are totally free and are designed to fit in around bigger games like Frostgrave. Either way I would love to see some painted pictures
Another Wizard will soon be joining the fray in The Roots of Magic!
This character is called Otremia Rathe, Fist of the Heavens. She is the first Wizard from the new faction - the Order of Maleoch, a group of witch hunters and cult breakers that roam Mellorian fighting the evil brought about by worshippers of the Great Wyrm of the Dark.
Here is the final version of the 3d sculpt for this model:
I suspect she will be available on the site by early September.
I'm gearing up for a KS to be run in Q4 this year which will introduce an acolyte Wizard for each of the released Wizards so far, plus a few models as stretch goals. These will include Mercenaries and Demons for use in your games of the Roots of Magic. Please visit the website, and/or Facebook & Twitter for more updates.

Just a little more information regarding stretch goals that will be part of the upcoming KS later this year.
This is an example of one of the models that will be available if goals are met: it is a Demon of the First Gate, from the Bells of Lao Tsu scenario (and can be used in other scenarios and via models not yet released).
Art by Shane Cook, Sculpt by Matt Clarke.
A nasty little fellow and no mistake!
There will also be the larger demon variants, as well as a small number of Freelancer (mercenary) options depending on how far we get. This is alongside the 'core' offering - 8 apprentice Wizards.
Please check out the website and social media sites int he coming weeks and months for more details.
We are looking to add more designs in the near future. The mats are 2x2 feet and have a printed duelling circle on them which will allow for quick and easy scenario play. Because they are small the mats are fairly cheap, but they are the usual DCS quality product.
We now have Otremia Rathe back from the painting team:
A great job for a really great model (if I do say so myself)
Otremia Rathe, Fist of the Heavens will be available as an add on for the Roots of Magic: Students of Sorcery Kickstarter project. It will be available to purchase directly from the webstore immediately after the Kickstarter ends (mid-December) for those that would like to own it but do not want to participate in the KS project.
