Subject: Dreadnought (venerable) with Ultramarine Tactics in a drop pod

Hi there,
I was wondering:
what do you think of a venerable dreadnought (ct5) with UM chapter tactics ?
Imagine it with an assault cannon, and, say, a missile launcher: you drop, using Devastator tactic (reroll of 1's, not necessary to use the Tactic tactic) and you fire, hitting on 2+, rerolling the 1.
Do you think it could do a good anti tank ?
Or maybe with the multi melta ? A melta shot which (almost) can't miss, it is, interesting, but you still can roll 1 to damage ...
What do you feel about it ?

If you're going for anti-tank, an Assault Cannon is not the best choice. Multi-melta or Lascannon is far better for AT purposes

Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

If you are podding, you probably want to keep the fist.
But I like the idea of the AsC or the MM. As non-TLd guns, they get a lot of mileage out of the BS5

I also think keeping the powerfist is good idea, as replacing it out is waste of that WS5, I4, 5 attacks on the charge combat potential. The range weapon would depends on what else you are bringing in other droppods. If you are bringing stock sternguard for anti infantry / anti MC, it is better run the Ven Dread with MM to anti tank. If you are using melta command squad, then bring Assault Cannon and HF under the fist to shred infantry instead. I would not recommand LC or autocannon, as you are getting closer to enemy via droppod, so MM and AssC is more deadly then those longer range weapons in their respective fields.

Dreads getting CT helps them immensely on top of getting 4 attacks.
For rerolling the shooting, the Assault Cannon is the best bet. It overall does a better job than the Lascannon and Multi-Melta and is a TAC weapon to boot. So I'd say Assault Cannon and Power Fist if you're wanting to engage in melee from a Drop Pod.

What bother me with the fist is I don't think the dreadnought will be able to sustain heavy fire and use it.
This is why I thought of putting the missiles launcher on him: to do the maximum damages before being destroyed.

If you don't expect it to survive then putting an expensive one shot per turn weapon on it is a bad idea, it get's even worse when you're purposefully putting it in a drop pod so it's going to spend less time on board getting shots off and more time closer to the enemy
keep the fist, i don't know the rest of your list but the ASC is almost always good but if you need AT then keep the MM

venerable is better as a ranged weapon and anti-deepstrike unit, his bs5 is too valulable to simply throw him at the enemy in a derpstrike like the standard dreadnaught, or as simply a way of getting him up the table into a position to charge like the chaplain dread or the ironclad

Chaplain and Contemptors still need to be FAQ'd to have 4 attacks base. Once that happens I'm gonna be SOOOOOOO happy.
Oh and having Chapter Tactics and whatnot.

Like above, for droppod do a gun with fist and flamer, if you want him to sit off and fire twin linked lascannon and ML works well or rifleman
