Do the various Tau Septs ever combine forces or do they generally field entire forces of their own? I wanted to paint my Infiltration cadre from T'au and my Hunter cadre from Vior'la, just not sure if it fits fluff fwise as I haven't read any of the fluff books.

The Tau can field combined Sept forces, although there distinct preference is for Septs to field their own force, but most large military campaigns see military forces of multiple different Septs cooperating together. Considering the Tau have a highly centralized Command Structure, complete with a High Command of the entire Fire Caste, and a Supreme Commander who has authority over the Fire Caste regardless of Sept its not unlikely to imagine that they have combined Sept Forces. In Kauyon, for example, there are two notable forces of Vior'la and Tau fighting together.

That's on a large scale. On a smaller scale many Tau novels which perceive things from the position of Tau infantrymen, like the Fire Warrior novel, have units composed of individuals hailing from different Septs. In Fire Warrior this is used to often give traits and character (unsurprisingly the squad mates tend to stereotype their comrades humorously by their home Sept) and treat Sept the same way one might treat people within an armed group hailing from different provinces of the same country.

Hope that helps.

I don't remember it that clearly, although I do now have an image of a Vior'la Tau being characterised as Glaswegian.
