I noticed the other day how the HH campaign books make it possible to play a 'loyalist' legion of any color. This makes sense to me, as the traitors were really the primarchs and the part of their legions who followed them, rather than entire legions. This also makes those crazy post- heresy theories about loyalist chapters bred from traitor gene- seed viable. But I don't know if I've seen any stories or real fluff about this outside of the HH rulebooks. Are there any neat details about this anywhere else?

I went to Hershey Park in central PA this year, and I have to say I was more than a little disappointed. I fully expected the entire theme park to be make entirely of chocolate, but no. Here in America, we have "building codes," and some other nonsense about chocolate melting if don't store it someplace kept below room temperature.

Flight of the Eisenstein gives a good example of this as a group of Death Guard Loyalists and a single Lunar Wolf try to break the blockade of Istvaan.
There is also a short story in one of the compendiums which focus on the siege of a loyal Iron Warrior stronghold.

Istvaan III made it pretty clear what happened to the loyalists of the legions who participated in the cleaning, but there could still be survivors left.
For the Dropside traitors we only know for sure how the Word Bearers handled their 'too loyal' brethren. Every one else is of to suspicion for us.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

Black Shields are their own thing in the Horus Heresy, to be expanded on in the next Forge World book.

In Unremembered Empire, there's a Chapter of Loyalist Iron Warriors helping Guilliman make a new Astronomican.

It was far less than a chapter.

As for other chapters, the Death Eagles are explicitly mentioned as being the name of a Emperor's Children Millennial that stayed loyal and continued fighting. I would say it's fair to say that every single legion, with no exceptions, had marines fighting on both sides of the Heresy.

Heresy Black Shields and Deathwatch Blackshields are different entities altogether.
They both have a similar origins, but there is no evidence to suggest that Heresy Black Shields created the Deathwatch.

The actual Deathwatch was created millennia after the Heresy, by a conclave of Ordo Xenos Inquisitors and Space Marine Chapter Masters. To our knowledge, there is no evidence of Heresy Black Shields being involved in the creation.

I'd say it's far more likely that the Heresy Black Shield you describe goes on to be one of the 8 founding members of the Grey Knights.

Yep, as others have already mentioned, read Flight of the Eisenstein and Fulgrim in the Horus Heresy novels for loyalist marines from traitor legions. If you are reading those, you might as well read the first 5 books in the HH series:

Horus Rising
False Gods
Let the Galaxy Burn
Flight of the Eisenstein
Fulgrim

Spoiler:
Several of the characters from those books from the Sons of Horus/Luna Wolves, Deathguard etc go on to be founding members of the Grey Knights later on

Everyone says this, but I don't get it at all. If the GK are all psykers, how do non- psykers become Grey Knights?

We have yet to see how and if the Knights Errant, (Which are what the surviving marines actually become) turn into the Grey Knights. However, there was a short audio that involved a Thousand Sons Knight Errant leading a whole shipload of psykers to Terra, on Malcador's orders.)

When was that? I only bother to keep up with the novels for the most part but that might change.

My mistake, it was not an audio but a short story called, "All That Remains" and was printed in the Imperial Truth anthology. A ton of the event exclusives and ebooks are getting released to the novel reader in the form of Legacies of Betrayal and Blades of the Traitor, which combined go a long way to catching people up on what's been missing and a lot of stories that piece the novels together.

Looks like the entirety of the Imperial Truth has digital releases as well.
