You might want to plop your clear asteroid bases on shapes the same size as the asteroids in the box sets. Just to practice with the irregular contours and not be stumped at tournaments. Have them only sit on it so you can remove the sponges for delicate maneuvers, because they do look great.

Top work !

Very nice table and cool idea using the sponges for the asteroids. I'd second the idea of putting asteroids on asteroid shaped bases. I'm assuming that you're not too interested in tournaments with this table and this is just for home, so not a huge deal though.
I did my 3D asteroid bases using clear plexiglass cut out with a band saw and used the standard asteroids as templates. Then, whenever someone were to overlap an asteroid, we just replace the 3D with the 2D cardboard. Just a thought.
Well done table none-the-less.

I'm starting to look at assembling my asteroids out of some pumice that I had. my thought is to get some 3mm plywood cut the bases out and then have some timber rods slotting into a drilled hole in the pumice stone. that way when people land on them I just remove the stone and have the base there for the time being.

Nice work! Thirded (or whatever) on the asteroid bases - that's the bit that matters so it makes sense!
