Somewhere Ironic

Having read Dune and watched Firefly, I'm in the taste for GMing of DND in Spaaaaace, using the rules from one of the FFG books. The campaign will be played like your average DND group; a bunch of adventurers adventuring with barely enough money for their next meal. With that in mind, I've been looking at Only War and Rogue Trader for rules for this campaign, knowing that I'll probably need to make up other rules for things like small purchases (something only Dark Heresy had).

What are some things you can suggest from both books (and their supplements) that would make this work? What are the best qualities of both books, in relation to this campaign idea? Do you suggest I use other rules entirely?

If you must use the FFG engine I'd lean more on DH than RT. RT games are built more towards having relative piles of assets just by their nature. Still I'd probably suggest doing some research into if there's another game engine out there you like built with a less setting-specific focus, or at least with a focus closer to your inspiration material. Like, iirc correctly there's an actual Firefly RPG out there. Forking over the extra $40 or whatever the book costs might be worth not trying to ram a square peg into a round hole.

You know, in the book Of Dice and Men, the author (David Ewalt) details one of his favorite DnD campaigns ever, which took place in a post-vampire-apocalypse version of our modern world. Think a ruined London, an urban wasteland for centuries, now home to a settlement of mind-flayers... Classic DnD baddies are present - some as they appear in the original, others as analogs that are "mutated" contemporary creatures - and magic shows up as psychic abilities or tech from the long dead "modern" world. It seemed like most of the rules could be quite easily adapted to fit that setting, so assuming you like one of the DnD rulesets then adapting to space (Star Wars style sci-fantasy would be easier than harder sci-fi) seems straightforward too.

My favorite campaign from when I was a kid for AD&D was Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. It was so different and whenever I see DnD and Space used in the same sentence, that's right where my brain goes.

That is D&D in space.

I used to play D20 Modern and future. Had to mod the crap out of it in places (Character classes and Currency system mostly), but it its a fairly solid system besides that, and it gives you rules on building and modifying your own ship.

Now that I think of it, its about the same amount of effort you would have to put into converting DH. But its another option on the table for you

There's actually experimental rules for "modern magic" in D&D 5e. They may even make a supplement for this one day.

Or you could find a copy of GURPS. It is probably the best roleplaying system I know.

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...

Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"

Or Dragon Star for that matter.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.
