Greetings,
I wasn't sure where to put this, since they are technically dice and only a game if you make it one. I just wanted to chat about how different people use the Cubes. My daughter and I like to play and make games of various types and styles. Sometimes they are card games, sometimes board games, and sometimes story games. We use the Story Cubes in a number of different ways.
1. Each player rolls 5 dice and then can arrange them in any order. They then tell the story using a sentence or two for each dice. We then decide which story we liked best and why. The winner can score points or gets a treat or whatever.
2. Each of us draw a stick character. We then draw three physical attributes on it. I.e. big muscles= strength, Long hair= girly, Glasses= poor vision/smart, etc. We then draw on the side 5 items they carry, give them a name and that is our character. We roll one die to create the setting and another die to create the problem. We then split up the remaining dice randomly. One of use will start telling the story of our characters, but whenever there is a challenge or something that can not happen automatically we roll one of our dice and use what comes up to tell the story going forward. We can avoid rolling the dice if one of our attributes/items can be used instead. If the other player wants to take over the story-telling they have to "spend a dice" to take over the narration.
The goal is to complete the challenge in the story in 30 minutes and keep as many dice as possible. If you win, you can carry-over a re-roll /dice into the next game.
3. At work, as an Icebreaker each person rolls a single random dice and they must tell us a quick story about themselves related to what they rolled. This works great to get peopel talking and seeing each other as colleagues and not just work units.
4. Each player has a pool of dice, one of them rolls a dice and starts a story. After a few sentences, they stop and point to another player. That player rolls their dice and must pick up the story and add in elements from the dice roll. You go until all the dice are used. The group wins if they tell a complete story using all the dice.
5. We play a version where you move around a board. If you hit certain squares you have to roll the dice and do one of the following:
- Tell a joke related to what you rolled
- Sing a song related to what you rolled
- Act out a TV/Movie scene related to what you rolled
- Tell us a fact about what you rolled
If you succeed, you can keep moving across the board with a limit of three successes in a row. First one tot he end wins.
6. We roll 3-5 dice. Then, we have to draw a scene using what we rolled in 10 minutes. We then share what we created and judge who won. The winner gets a M&M or something similar.
7. During RPG games, if they have to travel, I will have the players as a group roll a few dice and then tell me what happened to them on their journey based on the result. it can often lead to fun little RP/random encounters and helps flesh out their character. i have also used it for Group/Character backstories and plot points.
I have two of the normal set, 1 of the voyages, and 1 of the action set.. I am always looking for new and fun ways to use the cubes. I love them. So, what sort of games do you playing using the story cubes?
