Hey Dakka,

I have been issued a challenge to beat my friends ork army using a thousand sons army. I have been mixing and matching through army builder and so far I have been unable to really pick a list that I think would be effective.

Any lists or units you think are a must include?

I know its bad form to post in Army list without an actual army list so here is something that I whipped up.

CSM Codex:

HQ:
Ahriman

Troops:

35x Cultists

2x Squads of Thousand sons w/ Rhinos

Heavy Support:

Chaos Vindicator

2x Maulerfiends

Chaos Daemons Codex:

HQ:

Lord of Change w/ d6 Exalted Rewards, psyker level 3

Elites:

2x Flamers of Tzeentch

Troops:

2x Squads of Pink Horrors w/ 10 men each

Fast attack:

Screamers of Tzeentch w/ 4 screamers

i don't play tzeentch marines, so it's hard to speak in regards to them, but for the daemons:

if you're using the LoC, give him two greater rewards and a lesser reward (which always becomes the staff of change). he becomes a bad ass in melee with this build, especially running divination. he gets even better if he has a buddy giving him shrouding support. (could easily swap in a tzeentch prince running telepathy and the same gift load out to be the LoC's wingman)

units of 4 screamers aren't likely to accomplish much. YMMV, but they've never been useful for me unless i have 8-9 of them, and i usually stick two heralds in with them as well.

flamers are great vs 4+ saves and worse, but you can't have just 2 of them.

and lastly, up the horrors to 11 each. nets you 2 more warp charges

I don't think you should run a 35 cultist blob. If they aren't fearless then they will likely be cut down in melee by Orks or just run off the board. They work best as MSU for simply holding an objective and nothing more.

I'd also consider dropping Ahriman for a regular Tzeentch Sorcerer. Maybe on a Disc with a couple spawn to escort and make him fearless. Then he can just ride up and witch fire, then boost into cover.

Thanks for the constructive criticism.

@slamma Thanks for the rewards tip, I dont play daemons too much so I had no idea what would have been good. I think I counted the flamers wrong, I think its two squads of three. The screamers are in there just to fill the point gap of about 100, anything you would cut to increase them or should I just drop them and get something else?

@UncleanOne The cultists where just a shield for Ahriman, doesnt he make them fearless? The Sorcerer on disk is an interesting idea.

a basic guideline with daemons is that they want to be in big units that can be buffed up and protected.
perhaps drop the flamers altogether and just use screamers?
often it makes the most sense to run the horrors with malefic demonology, so you could bring in some flamers using them if you really need them. plus, orks are likely to pass their toughness test during their warp flame check, so you may end up passing out a fair bit of FNP.
screamers have some nice flexibility in that they are super fast, don't have to be in combat to cause damage, and can go after vehicles if you need them too. they would also benefit from shrouding support.

Ah I didn't realize he was with them. Sorcerers aren't normally fearless, is Ahriman? I'll look on my codex later.

Even still I think he'll have more luck if you put him with the Thousand Sons. He's still pretty powerful and can witch fire the gak out of stuff. Also a force weapon.

Ahriman, like every other Chaos general, is Fearless. Sorcerers are the oddball being non-Fearless. Even our basic Chaos Lord is Fearless. Heck, the Thousand Sons are Fearless.

He's actually not all that great of a guy even with witchfire spam so you're going to want him somewhere he can't get murdered to death. Thousand Sons really don't fit that category as they will never escape melee combat. Huge blobs of Cultists are sadly more effective in Assault than they are and last longer against shooting too. I'd guess he's running a standard 5-man squad of Sons which will die about as fast as any 5-man SM squad, yet even with a full Rhino of them, 10 models that die 1-in-3 times to bolter fire are worse than 35 wounds with multiple attacks and Overwatch.

It's called a thick skin. The Jersey born have it innately.
