I'm looking to invest in a Land Raider for my joint SM/Skitarii force soonish, (either Crusader or Redeemer, can't decide), but I just want to get something clarified on the sponsons.
Now, the standard "build" has them located at the back end, with the weapon barrels in front of the access hatch (which makes no bloody sense to me), if I were to use the Redeemer pattern and mount the Flamers forward, does this count as Modelling for Advantage?
In the same vein, I have a habit of basing all my IC's (CM and Psyker) on the Terminator sized bases, because it just looks better and gives them a better presence. I can't use the bases the model comes with, because I convert/kitbash my IC's from scratch.
Way back, when the current Land Raider was first released, WD had all kinds of blurbs about putting the guns in either front or rear locations, whichever way you like. I have ALWAYS, from the first LR I ever built, put the guns up front because that's where they make sense.
Anyone who whines at me about MFA for that isn't worth my time to play against.
While I just build mine as shown in the pictures, I would have no issue with you doing this, it makes perfect sense to mount the guns in front of the access hatch.
TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

Hahahaha! I've seen that!
The old LR instructions had the guns mounted up front, and that's good enough for me.
No MFA to be seen here.
You’ve seen one in the wild? I always though the double-side LR was just something tossed around in MFA arguments as an absurd extreme theoretical. WD245 had a write up on how to build the new at the time LR kit, and tells you both front/back are fine. (Sorry for the sideways pic) My old instructions are long gone, but the White Dwarfs linger on the shelf.
I guess while on the topic of “wrong” ways to build, one front, the other back would also be bad. Never heard anyone doing that though.

Forgive me but I'm struggling to see why having both on the same side of a LR is MFA.
That's sacrificing a massive firing arc in order to concentrate firepower.
Yes, the one side becomes deadlier but the other side becomes an opportunist's wet dream.
I see that as tactics;
Fluff-wise these Land Raiders are built to be modular and easily repairable. If a commander decided that for a battle he wanted the LR to have its weapons on one side and planned around that, it could and should be done.
Game-wise it's a trade-off. If you believe you can make use of a Land Raider with that build and wish to plan around that, why the hell not? Your opponent should just deal with it, like an enemy force would have to.

Now if only you could mount multiple sponsons, Hurricane Bolters AND Flamers on each side!

No MFA there either IMO - the larger base helps a bit in reaching CC but it also helps enemies get into CC with you easier. As long as your kitbash ICs look nice and are identifiable as the thing they're supposed to be I'd have no problem with it.

or 4 Hurricane bolters.
Imagine the dakka. O_O
What you are looking for is the Land Raider Terminus Ultra. TLLC sponsons in the back, Pred single LC sponsons up front, and swap out the TLHB for a TLLC from a razorback. Enough dakka to fell a titan. It’s the next step up from the Phobos. They don’t make a redeemer or crusader variant, unfortunately.

No, it isn't sacrificing anything. It's gaining everything and MFA. Put a land Raider Redeemer on the table in front of a squad of 3 boys in normal spread. Face-on, how many boys can you actually get under the flame templates?
Now turn the land raider to it's side and place the templates as though both flamers were on that side. You should be able to cover 2x to 3x as many boys.
How is that not an advantage? Furthermore, go look at the instructions that came with the land raider. Does it have both guns on one side? No?
