Warzone Mont'ka drops next week, bringing with it a veritable smorgasbord of new formations for the Imperial Guard. Between that and the rumours of a new codex at some point in the not-horrifically-distant future, I realised that my Codex:IG tactica (link in the top line of my sig) was getting a little out of date, it's last major update was with the last codex, and then a few tweaks were made at the start of 7th.

And that's where you come in. I'm pretty much 'out' of 40k by now, not because of any great hatred for the game or anything, just because I can't seem to get a game these days for various reasons, mostly time, space and lack of players. But like the Batman, 'That Guy What Wrote The Guard Article' can be anyone, so I'm looking for someone to take on the mantle and the task of getting this tactica up to date for the new changes and 7th edition as it stands, and to keep it relatively up to date with any new major changes that come along.

While I am handing it over, there are elements of it that I feel were integral it its success and the whole reason behind writing it that I'd like to see maintained, so I'd like anyone who volunteers to help to continue in the same vein as much as possible. These elements are:

- This tactica was never about building the best list, or the best units, or winning GTs. There are plenty of others that cover that sort of thing, from people far more qualified than I. Instead, my aim was to consider each unit not asking 'should you play it?, but asking 'how should it be played?' As such, the tactica is not concerned with whether unit A is better at task X than unit B, it's about helping someone who's just bought unit B get the most out of it on the tabletop. Case in point, Ogryn are neither the most efficient or effective unit in the codex, we all know that, but there is still a discussion there on how to use them to their best effect, should you want to for whatever reason.

- As such, the tone of the tactica should avoid being negative, It should never tell the reader not to take a unit (though obviously, it can still point out if another unit fulfils the task better), and if there are multiple uses for a unit, it should consider them all, not just whichever one is considered most effective. In other words, it should list the pros and cons of each method/setup, and let the reader draw their own conclusions as to which they'd prefer to use.

- On the whole, the tactica is also written assuming it'll be facing 'reasonable' lists that you might see at a friendly gaming event, not the latest Cheese of the Day spam/gimmick/skew list. We all know that even the best Guard army is going to fall down to an Eldar Scatterbike Spam list, but realistically you're not likely to see that outside of a competitive environment, which is not the audience this tactica is for;

- Lastly, it's about more than just the units. In the original, there's example lists of varying strengths and styles, discussions about the various play styles you can employ with the codex, and now, the Formations from Mont'ka need to be added as well. The idea is that someone should be able to read it, go an build up a Guard army, and know what to do with that army once it hits the table. It's about informing people, not telling them which units 'should/shouldn't/must/mustn't' take.

So that's all there is to say, really. Whoever volunteers to take this up will, of course, have access to the original text to edit as necessary(although I'd suggest you set up a simple site or blog to host it on, simply as mine has all the design appeal of a 2 year old's crayon drawing), and ultimately, it would be 'theirs' from that point on. I'm not going to be breathing down your neck saying change this or add that, I only ask that you follow the guidelines above as the original article was something I put a lot of time and effort into, and I would like to think it can keep helping people in the same way in its new, updated form.

I'd do it myself, but I have neither the time or the requisite knowledge of the current state of 40k these days to do it competently, So in the same way that my article was inspired by one for the 5th edition codex here on Dakka, I hope someone else will take up bringing mine up to date for 7th edition.

Thanks for your time, if you're interested them either post in the thread or PM me and I'll get back to you.

I read the Baneblade formation....

3 Baneblade chassis superheavy's and an Enginseer.

-Enginseer gets a +2 on all repair rolls

-Enemy units hit by three more more Primary Weapons must take a Morale test on 4D6

-All terrain within 12" of the vehicles is difficult terrain for enemy models

Then I remembered how my SM playing friend loves to be a dick and bring his triple Vindicator spam.

Psykana Dividion is the best sacrificial chaos cult ever created, quite possibly the most efficient warp charges in the whole game.

I mean damn, effectively 30 points per warp charge, manifesting on 2s, immune to perils? Damn... Wyrdvanes are back on the map in a big way.

I would volunteer, but I'm afraid I haven't got a blog or any web editing talent.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

How about a formation that gives all units a free transport,......no wait they already did that.

Oh how much better that would have been if Guard could have had that formation.....Chimeras for days.

Anyhow when are the new Astra Millawhatever ....IMPERIAL GUARD slotted to come out? I really hate the new name.

Not so much as per individual game but he knows that my Guard rely upon cover to have any saves whatsoever. Ever since that book dropped he has always brought triple Vindicators to a game and almost always casts Invisibility on them. Essentially he is left with an invulnerable deathball which can roll around heedless of my AT firepower whilst it massacres my Infantry and pops my tanks. Every. Single Game. In which he plays his Marines I have to face that combo and every single game I struggle to deal wit it. His psykers are always hidden out of LOS, either by buildings or behind the Invisible Vindicators - another aspect of Invisibility I hate as one would think that invisible units would not block LOS - and on the rare moments that they are not I usually have to contend with 4+ invuns, cover and the like.
The only way to stop it is to work around until you get a shot at the Librarians and then hit them with everything. If you can kill the Invisibility spamming one then the Vindicators become vulnerable to long range AT fire again but until you can do that they are essentially invulnerable to all my AT stuff.

Also three Baneblades is most of your army in a 2K game - the cheapest I can get this formation at is 1390 before upgrades and with three Baneblades it would be 1610 before upgrades.
