Hello.
So me and a friend where pickng 40k armies and we got into the topic who best represnts each for those wanting to switch . This includes charcters armyfell and play style.
Empire = guardsmen works best in well maintained groups heroes help boost stats.
Dark elves = Dark eldar for ovbious reasons
High elves = Eldar
Orcs and goblins = orks and gobos
Skaven = tyranids lots of worthless mobs who if die oh well with a few elite heroes.
Ogres = Necron even the most basic guy can take and give a beaten.
Wood elves = SoB you will never get support.
Warriors of chaos = chaos space marines both depend on two units or daemons to last.
Sigmar knights = space marine anything your army can do they can do better for less points
Bretonia = squats know one remembers what they look like but heard of em.
What you guys think ?

Lore wise, while most armies have have an equivalent not every equivalent is a playable faction. For example Skaven have always been seen as the Hrud, Lizard Men as the almost identical Slaan. Ogres were Ogryns, Dwarves were squats (come on man, Bretts=Space Dwarves better then regular dwarves???) Tomb Kings were are modern Necrons.
Play style wise, Wood Elves have more in common with Dark Eldar then Dark Elves (fast, good shooting and melee with no saves to speak of with some Tough Models) and Brettonia has more in common with Knight Freeholds then with Squats.
In essence, your list doesn't really represent a good equivalent for either lore or play style apart from the obvious ones. Some of your connections are extremely tenuous, no wood elf support? Sylvanaeth much?

Seeing as we've been given no background for how certain factions are in AoS (or if they even still exist) this question is next to impossible to answer.

There's fluff in each of the compendiums. You must have missed it

Okay, where are the Dark Elves? What have they been up to? What are they like? Where are they found? What's their relationship with the High Elves like now?
Will these "Dark (A)Elves" when they appear have any resemblance to their WHFB predecessors?

They are the aelfs that fell into shadow world and lived there and they are mad at the sun elfs aka high elfs for living in sun world and having it easyer. And their ruler is sir darkhoof who failed the sun gods challange and left out of hate.
Or with the new way lore is written they the elf from dark world who are endless we think cause it to dark to see. Another well written back ground for AoS

The Aelf Exiles are in the "darkened places of the realms". They've been up to "bringing death to every foe they meet", they enjoy "lightning raids" and leaving "corpses piled high in their wake". Where are they found? I already told you, in the "darkened places of the realms". Their relationship with Aelf Highborn? Well Aelf Highborn live in Azyrheim and Aelf Exiles don't presumably because it isn't "darkened" enough... Or maybe they are in the "darkened places" of Azyrheim too. Anyway it would suggest their relationship is non-existent which depending on the timeline of WHFB is better or worse than it was before. Do they share resemblence to WHFB Dark Elves? Well they share lots of the same hobbies so aelflovematch.com says yes ;-)

It's the other way around. 40k was originally presented as a 'but in space!' Version of fantasy.
Imperium and guardsmen represent the typical fantasy 'human empire'. Space marines are its knights (and bikers are akin to knights on horses). Eldar are elves. Dark eldar, craftworld eldar and eldar corsairs amongst them. Orcs are obvious. Necrons are undead in space. Even the name (necro) should give that away... Squats were dwarfs, which are now the demiurg.

Yep, the only 40k races not developed from a fantasy trope are probably the Tau and Tyranids, instead developed from a manga trope and the aliens franchise respectively.

And the AdMech, who were inspired by Dune.

Hm, I guess so, I'm not familiar with Dune but I know lots of 40k is meant to draw reference from it. Ad Mech have that secret priesthood / mysterious order vibe going for them too.

If the main High Elf ideology actually manages to live on to AoS, I can guarantee you that they have little to do with the Eldar aside from the pointy ears, lithe bodies and the same Pantheon (in theory)
Eldar are arrogant, manipulative pricks that will put others in harm's way to protect themselves without a second thought - they have no interest in any species other than themselves: the other species are merely pawns to be sacrificed or put down because they are inferior.
The Asur are arrogant but they are also selfless - they have saved the (now destroyed, how quaint!) World at least a couple of times before and pretty much GAVE the Empire the gift of Magic. They favour cooperation instead of manipulation. Yeah they will look down on you and think themselves superior, but they will have no problem in dying to save a Human village (or even, gasp! a dwarven outpost!)

You read the endtimes? The elves litteraly killed wfb. The godess screwed with some human heads to do what she wanted enslaved children. Testicles tried to place the magic and lost it, so again I know better. They let nagash be reborn ect ect. The end tomes is just a long story of how the elves screwed us all.

Mannfred fethed it all up - move on.
Also, please stop confusing Asrai practices with Asur. kk? What Lileath did (A Goddess of the entire species) has nothing to do with what the Asur (one of the three races) did, or do.
As for Teclis - he did what he did for the greater good of uniting the entire elven species again and saving the world from Chaos. He sacrificed his niece (an elf), and his brother (another elf, duh) and managed to mobilize the entire elven species to help the Empire in a desperate gambit to stop Chaos in something that hadn't been seen since the days of Aenarion (without the Empire bit, of course).
So... yeah... You read the endtimes?
