Here's one of the two heroes from the Betrayal at Calth box, the Cataphractii-armored captain, painted as a Blood Angel. I added some Blood Angels skulls in the bare spots that were reserved for decals Bonus points if you can guess where the shoulder skulls came from!

First the pics:



He is a very cool model, though like his Chaplain counterpart, he has some pieces that are really difficult to reach (paint) once assembled, and some pieces that will leave some really ugly gaps if you paint it in subassemblies. I detached the head from the torso, and the shoulder pads from the top of the top piece (what strange pieces to connect anyhow). But I was still left with the dilemma of not being able to reach the back of the legs and the inside of the cloak if assembled, and if painted unassembled, there were some ugly gaps in the front. In the end, I painted the back of the body and the inside of the cloak unassembled, then put it together, filled the gaps, primed that area with gesso, and painted the outside of the model.

Nice overall. Could just be me, but the eyes look a bit weird.

Good job man, I hate painting flesh tones. Especially bald heads. I am going to try really hard to switch out the head for a DA Knight hooded head.

Lovely paint job! I do agree that the eye could do with a little more work. Maybe narrow it and increase the pupil size so he looks a little less startled?

Great model! My only critique is that nothing really calls it out as a Blood Angel. It is red, but so are Heresy Era Thousand Sons. I would put a BA emblem on either one of the hip plates or on the top of the armor. Otherwise, very nice!

Thanks, guys! I hear ya on the eyes. On the model, the eyes are slightly slanted, which I'm not crazy about. Makes me think of the Mongolian White Scars look It's not really my favorite head -- I almost substituted it for another. But I have 3 of these models, so I figured I'd paint the first one as is. I should mention that the head looks a little better in real life than the photography. Because there is a really heavy shadow on obscuring the right half of the face, I had to point a light right at the head, which washes out a lot of the highlights. There's quite lot more contrast when you're actually looking at him under normal lighting.

@Tagony - I think he'll look great with a DA head! Word of warning, measure it twice, cut it once The head is attached to the stem that holds the torso. Which isn't a problem to cut off, but what is an issue is that if you want to do any detail, because of the way the right half of the face is unreachable, you need to have a perfect recess to sit it into when you plunk the finished head down, presumably into the otherwise finished model. As you can see in the photo, it's a pretty tight fit.

I didn't notice the blood drops on the skulls when viewing on my phone. Definitely see them now. Perhaps they could be jewels so they pop more?

Yah good call, on second look I probably will not have room for the hood. Now to learn how to paint hair stubble lol.
