Perturbed Blood Angel Tactical Marine

So I'm working on how I want to highlight my reds. I've painted a marine with Mephiston red and I know how to highlight that. Another marine I've painted in khorne red as I want a darker less cartoony look to my blood Angels. I was wondering if anyone has some examples or ideas of how to highlight a darker red with the new paints. I'm having trouble finding examples. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mixing in Orange then Yellow is a popular choice but that tends to look carntoonish. Mixing in white typically ends up looking pink, though sometimes you can get away with it depending on how you apply it, mixing in light grey can sometimes work. For example the model I'm currently working on I used a pot of bright vibrant red, mix in a touch of black for my basecoat and then mixed in a touch of white (so effectively light grey) for the highlight. It gives a nice dull looking red without being pink. It often doesn't work if you're trying to do extreme contrasting highlights and shades though. A middle of the road option is to try out flesh tones and sometimes a light beige, something like Rakarth Flesh can work because it's a bit dull to begin with. That will lighten a dark red without making it too vibrant/orange and also without making it look pink. I used to find Dwarf Flesh was a good one to mix in as a highlight for a dark red, not sure what the equivalent is in the current ranges.

Mix in a flesh tone for edge highlights. If it looks a little to peachy apply some red wash to tie it together.

Well I wanted to try the old flesh tearers paint scheme. Where you lay the base down and highlight with bleached bone. This is then washed with the old Baal red wash. However this paint is no longer in production. Haven't found a suitable replacement yet.

That sounds similar to my "light biege" suggestion. If I recall correctly bleached bone was about half way between Ushabti Bone and Rakarth Flesh. Ushabti Bone is a bit more yellow than Bleached Bone while Rakarth Flesh is a bit more dull. I've mostly replaced Bleached Bone in my line up with Rakarth Flesh, but that's because I prefer the more dull look. If you want a closer match one of the other paint ranges may be closer like Vallejo Model Color's Bone White. Coat d' Arms makes the old old GW paints, so they probably have something that matches the original Bleached Bone (I think GW changed the Bleached Bone formula about 12 years ago, so it may not match the most recent bleached bone). The old Baal Red wash I *THINK* is the same as Army Painter's red wash.

The Sons of Sanguinius Painting Guide uses Khorne Red washed with Nuln Oil with a highlight of Wazdakka Red followed by a fine edge highlight of Cadian Fleshtone for the red on the Flesh Tearers.

If you base with a dark red, highlighting with a lighter red works fine. Any other colour will generally make it look cartoonish.

I don't think Duncan actually does any highlighting in that video

Not really, there's several options that don't look cartoonish. I find highlighting a dark red with a lighter red looks cartoonish because the lighter red is usually too vibrant for a dark scheme.

Ah yeah, I missed it as I flicked through (I hate video tutorials ). But still.... that's not really a "dark red", I'd describe that as a "vibrant red".

Utilizing Careful Highlighting

Depends on the kind of red you're aiming for. Pinks, flesh tones and magentas could work, albeit with some red wash to tone it down. But for the average red tone, red orange works well. Just make sure it's not too orange (unless that's what you're aiming for). For dark reds, you can highlight it with a medium red.
