So if you've ever checked out one of the 40k codex "ebook edition" books, the ones that are $15 cheaper than the physical books, you'll know that they looks pretty bad. No fancy layout, just straight up text with some pics interspersed. Super disappointing. Well... that's all changed now. They've started releasing both White Dwarf and codices in "tablet" and "mobile" editions, and Jesus the difference from the previous "ebook" editions is remarkable. Now, they basically look like the physical book or the fancy enhanced edition, with all the layout bells and whistles that entails. What this means is that now the thing that everyone has been asking for, which is proper digital versions of books that are cheaper than the physical versions, is finally here. No need to buy the expensive Enhanced iPad editions or settle for the peasant (ebook) version. These are some screens from the preview for the Tau Codex Tablet Edition, which is $34.99. Note that these editions ARE proper epub files, not sad pdf scans. This is a pretty huge step forward for GW imo.

I hope they retroactively provide these for the old owners. I have some of those horrific ones and in many cases bought physical ones I genuinely didn't want, just because of the eyesores the digital copies were.

Actually... those look like proper pdf files (as every other fething company in the market and their uncle uses) instead of sad reflowed epubs, I'd say... ^^

Still ridiculously expensive for what they are, but a massive improvement over the previous offering, those were an eyesore.

If they go back and do this retroactively (or, and I know this is crazy, but *actually release one for CSM*) I might get a couple

I must be in the minority, then, of preferring ebooks (which are designed to be viewed on a variety of different screen sizes) over PDFs (which are designed to be printed out and viewed on paper). "every other fething company" (Except Osprey) promoting PDFs as suitable for tablets aren't doing it right.

(off-topic; sweary words are only replaced onscreen, it seems, rather than directly editing the posts. The "proper" word is still there when you quote Albertorius' post.

Ebook formats are flat-out inferior to PDF on anything except a mobile phone(and then only because using any kind of rulebook on a mobile is such an awful experience that exactly what flavour of bad you're given is irrelevant) because they were designed for novels, not picture-filled reference books(which is what codices amount to), and they were designed primarily for use on dedicated ebook readers. PDF also has the added advantage of not looking like total gak on proper computers, can offer multimedia features with the proper plugins, and yes additionally since printing them out was a core consideration when creating the format they actually look good when people choose to do that.

If people are being expected to pay GW Digital prices, you're damn straight most of us are going to(entirely rightly) expect the product we get looks at least as good as the physical version, rather than the feth-ugly paragraph-to-a-page fluff interspersed with gakky low-res pictures and rules with inexplicable page and line breaks everywhere that you're treated to with ebook formats.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

These are the best of both worlds. They are proper Ebooks with all the features of an EPub, but look as good as a pdf.
