I got some Tau when my LGS put some soon to be updated product on sale for Black Friday. I got:

Three fire warrior boxes,
Two crisis suit boxes, and
One pathfinder box

For $175.

I wish to build on this and make a good, fun, and if possible novel army.

What are your suggestions?

Btw, the fluff for the army in the Tau foreign legion. A force of inducted humans, elves, and dwarfs. (I will do head and foot swaps on all my guys)

Tau hands as only 4 fingers, so you might want to mess with that too.

Anyway, for your force the first thing you need is an HQ. A battlesuit commander is the eight choice most times.

At that point you can run a legal CAD, and very close to a hunter cadre, a hammerhead or broadsides will unlock the hunter (so will a stormsurge but I won't recommend it to a new Tau player)
A riptide/ghostkneel will also be good choices for a heavy lifter in your force.

Beyond that, impossible to say without knowing your desired playstyle, tau got multiple plays types and each is governed by different units. (except the mixed style, who can incorporate nearly anything, but is more of a random mash than a grand strategy)

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.
