So, Archaeon has a new model. For $165/£100 you can have your very own big guy riding a three-headed dragon.

Spoiler:

I'd love to hear Dakkas opinion- do you think the model looks good? You buying it? Do you see this monstrosity getting any tabletop use, or is it just mostly to be used for display? How many points is it, anyway?

My personal opinion is, well...

While the fine detail (the heads, the tail, the birds, etc.) looks really neat on their own, combined into a model they somehow look really tacky and busy, without any sense of direction. I think the paint job only makes things worse. The wings are pretty much the only part I really like. And Archaeon doesn't even look like his old self- he looks like some Diablo character. I guess the Eye of Sheerian must be gone. Why does his head look so small?

Oh, wait... I almost forgot

It doesn't have any points. So you can forget about that, I guess.

It almost looks amazing but for two glaring problems.
1. Skull acne is back and ruins what would be a gorgeous model.
2. The guy himself. Head too small. Too busy. Despite technical brilliance, the old version just had more personality and gravitas.

Also, check out my history blog: Minimum Wage Historian, a fun place to check out history that often falls between the couch cushions.

Awful. The previous one was one of the best models they've ever made. This is just big for the sake of being big, and the detailing just isn't good enough. Plus more skull-cysts.

I love it, and if I thought I could do it even remotely justice with my painting skills, I'd absolutely get one. I mean, this dude is HUGE. At a foot tall, he'd be larger than my Overlord Bastion, which basically makes him impossible to transport and will almost certainly snap if you tried. So playing him seems almost impossible, but when you do manage to get him on the table, it would just instantly make it an most epic battle ever as it towers over the entire table. If only I could paint that well...

I thought this was fitting.
Bigger doesn't mean its any good. The sad thing is, it actually could have been.

It is deservedly the most epic fantasy model yet. It's too detailed and high end for me to get, but I love that it exists and hope to see some paint jobs.

Two things.

1: How can anyone like the old archon model the horse was a minecraft horse he was literally a square no round edges just squared.

2: AND size does matter ask any woman or a tall guy is it raining up there too only to find out he is spitting on your head. Also field a epic warhound with 40k models and tell everyone its profile lol.

How does one transport it to play without it getting damged and without buying a whole bag just for that one model?

Do the 3 heads mean that slanesh is dead or something ?

In the 2020's when we look back and say "that figure is soooo 2000 and teens" we'll be talking about;

1. GW's current fascination with having all figures either balancing or floating on tendrils/tails/smoke to make them look larger warranting a hefty price tag.

2. Have skulls randomly pushed into their bodies as a cheap alternative to texturing.

I hate both of these things but I'm grateful to GW for them, as it's meant I've not had to buy any new expensive models from them in over a year now.

Currently most played: Silent Death, Mars Code Aurora, Battletech, Warcrow and Infinity.

They include the Mark of Slaanesh on the box, though any Slaaneshi element is absent from the model? Yet the other three Gods are each prominently referenced with the beasts heads?

I like it as much as I like the rest of AoS. Don't get the whole Slaanesh has no head thing personally.

Love the model but not the price (though it is huge... really huge). I will be getting one for sure as I love archaon. Nothing will be greater than his last metal sculpt though.

I really like his mount but wish he himself looked less cartoon and more akin to his last armored sculpt. That can be fixed though by cutting up an old finecrap model and combining it with this kit

I'm not sure about the model itself, but I'd love to see that thing vs an entire Warrior Chamber of Stormcasts.

I have a feeling he'd be able to put the better part of them down, too.

I think it is pretty terrible.

I hate how GW seems to think bigger=better for a lot of recent fantasy and AoS stuff Everything.

The skulls coming through the body are just weird.

My biggest problem with it is the fact that Archaon himself is not the focus at all. He could be any old chaos lord. No, the beast is the focus, the greatest champion of the 4 gods and destroyer of the old world is a footnote riding it.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I really like it. I actually prefer it to the old one, but then the whole reason I enjoy Fantasy is the big monsters.

And reading through the White Dwarf, the heads of the beast are because the gods sent champions to try and convince Archaon to pledge to just one God, and he defeated them. That's why there isn't a Slaanesh one, because Slaanesh isn't in a position to do that. He still has the mark of Slaanesh on his shield.

I think it's a big and impressive model! Would look amazing on the battlefield all fully painted.

My only problem is the feasibility of actually getting to play with a model that large and that powerful in a game like AoS.

In a game with no points and only 50~ish models a side including a model like this or Nagash is not going to result in many fair fights unless the opponent has a hard counter.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I love the model, the skull acne can be cleared with little problems and the size even if huge is quite fitting. One slight problem I already have the Glottkin so Im covered with crazy big chaos models for now. I also find the Glottkin design much superior to this one.

He's got a mark on the shield he's carrying. Plus the tail of Dorghar is fairly Slaaneshi. Malerion and Tyrion have supposedly captured Slaanesh after he gorged himself on souls, which made him vulnerable. So, MIA at the moment, but some of his most powerful servants are vying for the spot.

Yeh. I'm guessing that they've chained up Slaanesh in whatever dimension Solland currently occupies in the AoS multiverse... Nice one GW. Moving on.

Modelwise it makes me think of a BloodThirster / DE Hydra kitbash. It seems more about the scale of Dorghar so Archaon looks lost up there on his back. This is why the previous Archaon/Napoleon-crossing-the-Alps model worked. The model was a better balance of rider and mount in an effective, dynamic pose. I am looking forward to seeing people make their own scratch builds.

I think a smaller model (with a lower pricetag) would be plenty sufficient and still be an impressive centrepiece.

There is not this idea.

I think it's ugly, far too big, and awkward. But I'm not a fan of models that are big for the sake of being big. I like the soldiers, the armies of ordinary people, who can be quite detailed and filled with personality without becoming an over the top mess.

And I'd never buy it, simply because of the price. Even if I loved it, I would not pay that much for a single model.

The rules are just as massive as the model. Imagine him going up against the Seraphon. As soon as he slays one of the Slann wizards he will be able to start summoning Lizardmen down from the heavens to fight for Chaos!

Also that Deamon sword could slay Nagash with 2 lucky 6's. (And then he could summon almost every Death model too!)
