Hey all, I currently own over 5k points of Tau and when I sell off my wolves I am looking for something else to start collecting, painting and playing. I of course want something that plays differently to my tau which run as a very mobile gun line relying heavily on weight of fire and crafty positional play with jet pack moves.
I have no interest in an astartes army excepting grey knights. I also don't fancy necrons as I find games against them dull as you try kill off robots that just don't go down, I also don't want eldar as they ruined my all wraith army with the new codex when it became a cheesefest.
So please sell me on an army to take up and give me reasons including fluff behind builds as I love playing fluffy armies.
Thanks
Jay

Well, you've basically shut out a good portion of the armies then. There's Dark Eldar, they can make some cool and fluffy builds (Kabalite, Wych Cult, Coven). There's also Chaos Demons, who's codex has stood the test of time rather well, they can also make some cool builds which vary from God to God. Sisters of Battle might be a good one as well, but most of their line is in metal still, and some of it is no longer available. Lastly, there's Nids. They can make a decent variety of builds (nidzilla, horde, drop lists).

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

I was thinking nids or guard as they both vary tremendously in their builds. Can both go heavy hitters only or mass swarm.
One list I love the thought of is tunnelling nids with the trygon/raveners formation but how competitive is it. I don't fancy getting wiped.

Tyranids of course. The perfect adversary to tau, different playstyle even some psychic stuff. And also who doesn't like the look of Mechas fighting aliens on the tabletop.

Can't imagine I will be playing myself too often. My regular opponent fields necrons and orks. Not sure how nids will stand up to necrons without flyrants

Orks.
Tons of fun to work with. Fun to play and everyone will love you playing them. If you want to be the guy people want to play with and really enjoy the game then go Orks. They are also entirely different to what you are used to and as such offer a new perspective on things.

To add to this Orks are top tier when it comes to conversions, kitbashing, and theme potentials. Orks are also incredibly good for creating your own narrative and making things fun. Gameplay side of things there are a lot of builds for Orks (even for fairly competitive play) that tend to play fairly different from each other. Orks also give you a decent excuse to talk with a belligerent cockney...ish accent if you so desire .

Fully agree on all points but orks are my main opponents main army and although orks are the one army most likely to fight amongst themselves, I don't want to run the same army as its always good to have some variety in the armies you see.

#1 cause of Ork deaths are other Orks so there is nothing wrong with a clash of WAAAGHs!!! If your mainly going against Orks then I would suggest Space Wolves but your planning on getting rid of them it seems (My good friend plays wolves and the Ork vs Wolves matchup is really fun). Nids can be a lot of fun vs Orks as can Chaos be but both of those codexes have their fair share of issues and tend to be mono build in nature if you want something functional. Guard looks to be a lot of fun with all their powerful artillery, blobs of guardsmen, transports, good flyers, and tanks. Not the most competitive army but not hopelessly outclassed either. One of the more bearable shooting focused armies to play against in casual play.

Have those two armies myself and they are really nice both for playing and for painting since they differ so much in that regard. Nids go Flyrants, mawlocs, malanthrope etc. Rumor is that they might get a new psychic GC sometimes next which would be awesome if true.
