Hello everyone,

For about the next two hours, I will be streaming tabletop game art over at Twitch.tv. I will be doing a live tutorial on digitally painting armor with flat faces and sharp edges using the GIMP. You can watch the stream here:

http://www.kalidasia.com/live/

or, join the chat to ask me questions about the process, about creating tabletop games, or just just wargaming in general.

Thanks for watching.

I am going live on Twitch.tv again for the next hour. This time, I am doing a tutorial on Sci-Fi Helmet Digital Painting using the Gimp. You can jump in the chat to ask questions about the tutorial, tabletop game design, or tabletop gaming in general.

The links are in the first post in this thread. Thanks for watching.

In case anyone was wondering what I am doing with these videos, here is a 10 minute clip from one of the live broadcasts where I demonstrate how to add a chipped metal appearance to power armor artwork. This effect is often seen on various types of armor such as Space Marine Armor, Tau Battlesuits, Battlemechs, and other Sci-fi characters like the Master Chief.

Digital painting is a topic that may seem a bit intimidating, but it actually has a lot in common with painting tabletop miniatures. While the tools are completely different, the concept behind many of the techniques are identical between the two different types of art. In the end, both are about simulating a texture on a flat surface. In particular, the technique that I demonstrate in this video using the GIMP image editing software, can produce the exact same effect on miniatures.

Thanks for watching.

For about the next hour and half, I will be live streaming artwork on Twitch.tv for my game Legends of Kalidasia.

Today's tutorial will feature applying a glow to sci-fi helmet visors, pistol weapon design, and if time allows, cleaning up and merging layers in the GIMP.

The link for the video is up in the first post in this thread as well as a link to the chatroom where you can ask questions about the tutorial or anything about tabletop game design.

Thanks for watching!

I liked what you are doing but with status of current 3d design and 3d printing you ship designs look kind of simplistic

Thanks for the comment.

The top image, which is an Heragul Anti-Figther Frigate, has one of the first hulls I designed over five years ago, but has its back missile launchers replaced with some 3D printed gatling guns. It has been on the list to get redesigned, but due to several practical limitations of running a small tabletop game company, it remains the way it is. The second image is the Surakari Missile Boat. It is also a five year old hull with some extra parts added on about two years ago.

Hopefully in a few weeks, I will be showing off some of the final Colayth Guard miniatures. While these have many more details than either of the Frigates posted above, they are still minimalistic compared to some game's warships which have all sorts of bits and guns everywhere.

In the end, it is part limitation of the 3D modeling skills that I have and partly dictated by the story I am telling. I personally find warships with fewer guns mounted in large firing arcs to be more practical in a space combat setting than the age of sail style ships that are bristling with guns.

Also, an extra bonus, I have released all of the 3D models for my production miniatures, so anyone can modify or add to them for non-commercial purposes.

Hopefully that helps explain more about my warship design. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

While I may be biased just a tiny little bit, a well painted Kalidasia Squadron still looks pretty cool on the tabletop, even if the models might be getting old.

I understand it is your baby and i commend you of trying to market it, but with X-wing, Star wars armada, halo fleet battles and countless designs on shapeways, your designs look a little "outdated" to say the least. I will be looking forward to the redesigns as i am a space fleet battle fan.

For about the next hour or two, I will be live streaming artwork on Twitch.tv for my game Legends of Kalidasia.

This will likely be the last tutorial in the series as I focus on the Ice Terrain of the planet and possibly some lighting effects. Todday's tutorial is done with the GIMP image editing software.

For the next streaming series, I think I will tackle resin mold making and casting.

The link for the video is up in the first post in this thread as well as a link to the chatroom where you can ask questions about the tutorial or anything about tabletop game design.

Thanks for watching!
