I wanted to throw in a CAD to give myself some extra units that don't fit into formations I want.

If i want a thunderfire cannon anyways, can I count the techmarine that comes with the TFC as the HQ of the CAD? Then I'd just need 2 troops plus whatever else I wanted, in this case a Stormtalon.

What makes you think the TFC counts in anyway as a HQ choice?

No, that techmarine does not count as the TFC is a heavy support slot. Therefore, that techmarine is in a heavy support slot and not a mandatory HQ slot. Also, just my suggestion, bring an allies detachment, as that will only require one troop as opposed to two, an HQ as normal, and you can take the TFC in the HS slot provided and the stormtalon in the FA.

I'm guessing his primary is marines preventing an AD without a switch in CTs.

Thanks for confirming that the techmarine that guns the TFC cannot be counted as an HQ.

I have a custom chapter that uses Iron Hands chapter tactics. I am building an 1850 point list using a demi-company with a storm wing. But only had about 300 extra points and wanted to pack some other units in using a CAD.

I still can, but I will have to drop the sternguard squad I was hoping to include to gain a TFC.

Along the same line of thought...

The Armored Taskforce requires a techmarine, if you have a TFC in this detachment, would the included techmarine count or do you need to include an independent techmarine?

Unfortunatly no, as it refers to the techmarine in the HQ slot. The techmarine with the TFC cannon is part of the unit listed as TFC in heavy support, and not the unit listed as Techmarine in the HQ section.

A techmarine as an HQ unit, or the named unit in any formation is different from the techmarine gunner model in a tfc unit.

The HQ and required formation unit techmarine is the one found in the HQ section of the armylist(the unit called "techmarine").

The one in the tfc unit is never the same one. Both also have different options.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

The Techmarine Gunner is a Heavy Support model, as noted at the top of the Thunderfire Cannon's Datasheet. Unless you have something that changes the Thunderfire Cannon to HQ from Heavy Support, it stays as Heavy Support, even in Formations.

It is not a Techmarine, but a Techmarine Gunner. In addition, unless you have something stating otherwise, the list in the Formation is for the UNIT, and the unit you are asking about is the Thunderfire Cannon, not Techmarine.

If everything else is in formations, just play formations + unbound (being the TFC & gunner).. you still get the rules for models in formations, and I believe CT for models in the unbound part so long as they are all IH chapter. I used to not like unbound but I don't think 'unbound' = 'unbalanced anymore', formations did that all by themselves..

He's using Gladius which is a detachment so would lose the benefits if going Unbound.

Thanks everyone.

It would seem the Suppression Force would be the cheapest artillery option rather than spending all the extra points to get the TFC or lose the Gladius benefits for becoming unbound.
