There is not this idea.

Does the game play decently at 500 points? I'm trying to drum up some interest in my group, but lack of models is a bit of a problem right now, so lower point games are better. I also personally like lower point games in general, but I don't have much experience with them in the new KoW.

I've been messing around with lists, and it does seem like it's quite possible to get a list that consists of 1 regiment, two troops, and a war machine, monster or hero for most armies at around 500, with occasionally an item or two added on. Which fits in with the force builder thing rather nicely.

It isn't nearly as fun as 2000 points but yes you can play at that size. At a smaller size it often becomes a grind in the middle as the 2 lines hit.

At larger sizes things like monsters, flyers and magic + higher volumes of shooting drastically change how the game is played in a good way.

Just fyi: The normal armybuilding rules dont strictly apply for smaller games, specifically allowing any number of troops at sub-750pt games. Page 77 of the hardback. Just in case you didnt know already.

As to how it plays... not quite as well as larger games, but its still enjoyable. Tried at 1000 though, so it might be different at 500.

Yeah, that's about how my first real game went. Though I did manage to move my cavaly forward enough to get flank charged, so my opponent enjoyed that part at least.

Thanks, I missed that somehow. Maybe only using troops would keep the game more maneuvarable at 500 points?

Just enough to fit in 2 zombie legions and a revenant king...

What are these "troops" you speak of?

Honestly, I don't think KoW feels at all like KoW at any size lower than 1000pts.

Is it doable? Sure. But 1000pts+ create the environment where movement-is-king, which is a large part of why KoW shines. You need to be able to flank, bait-charges, etc... and that really requires at least 5-7 units at a BARE minimum, to start happening.

Its sort of how X-wing starter games are played at 30pts, but are just space-jousting, whereas 100pts feels like a genuine game of tactical combat.

Well, we tried out a 1000 point game (using much proxies) and yeah, it is a lot more of a game. Also a revelation on how much I need to learn, which is nice. Thanks for the advice, all.

Blu tak and cardboard for the biggers. Or just don't fill the tray.

Smaller points games lack something in KoW and for me it mainly shines at 1250pts. We play to a 20min timer and this creates a very very fun timed environment. With newer guys they get 25mins.
