With an eye to branching out into other factions (especially given how the missus is now grumbling that her dominion doesn't put enough smack on my rommies), what would be your top 5 ships to pick up for the Feds, the Klingons, Indies, Borg?

i would say for feds my favorite ships are
-Enterprise e
-Prometheus
-delta flyer
-Hathaway
-fighter squadron
these are not in any order just i find myself using them the most.

for borg i think
-sphere
-octahedron
-scout cube

i don't really play Klingon or independent yet

this doesn't mean there are the best by any means either i don't win very much lol.

"Travellin' through space is boring. Well, boring unless da hulk yer on is full of dem gene-sneakers, or a base fer da chaos lads wiv da spikes, or already has Boyz on it. Or if humie lootas come callin', that's always good fer a bit a sport. Or unless yer have a mutiny or two to pass da time, or unless strange fings start happenin', which dey usually do when yer out in da warp. One time we had some bloody great ugly fing come straight out of Weird Lugwort's 'ed! It butchered half da lads, that was pretty entertainin'. Come ter fink of it, space is a pretty good larf. And that's before yer find yerself a nice world ta crush!"

Generic Keldon

Klingon:

Vor'Cha
K'Vort
T'Ong
Neg'Var
B'Rel (still great for it's price)

For the Federation:
-Sovergiegn-Class
-Prometheus Class
-Akira Class
-Fighters
-The USS Reliant or the USS Equinox (The generics aren't exactly amazing, but the named variants are AWESOME)

Romulans:
-Scimitar
-Haakona (LOTS of great crew, the Unique ship's ability is pretty solid)
-Prototype 01
-Valdore (Donotra is great, and the Romulan Helmsman is sweet!)
-??? I Prety much only use these four, But whatever ship includes captain Mendak (After you move, repair 1 shield or hull if you are within range 1 of at least 1 friendly ship).

Hi guys!

I'm new to the game, one month and 7 ships in (including the starter set), and I was wondering...
The fighters (Federation & Dominion) have come up a few times in this post, are they still usable at Organised Play events?
The latest FAQ shows them under the "Retired Resources" section, am I missing something here, or are they being recommended for casual play?

Sorry if this is a noob question, but I haven't gotten a look at the fighters yet & I'm still finding my feet with the system

Don't be sorry it is a good question. The retired fighters came out a resource during the Dominion war. All resources retire from tournament play 18 months after release. The pack we have been talking about was a retail release. The retail fighters are perfectly legal for tournament play. They come in a standard looking retail package where as the resource comes in a clear plastic back tapped shut. Some venues will allow people to use the old resource version as a generic squadron from the retail pack as the dials and stats are the same, just ignoring the special ability, however check with the TO first.

Thanks Baldrick, that clears things up some!

MeanGreenStompa, your question has really helped me out with finding some direction with my fledgling fleet, so thank you too!

It looks to be a great little STAW community here on Dakka, I'm working my way back through trying to soak up some knowledge, hopefully I can contribute some in the future.

I strongly recommend playing friendly games before you move into OP events: the game loses something when it gets competitive. The system and the ships SHINE in free play, and the game is a blast when played that way.
Welcome to the warfront mate.

Have they released another Vor'cha yet or is the starter set still the only way to get another one?

IKS Drovana set to release in April 2016. It is the Vor'Cha from DSP that hit one of it's own cloaked mines. So look for a possible retail version of Klingon Cloaked Mines

Aside from the one pending release in April of '16, the only other Vorchas are the Mah'Taht and the MU one currently in the blind boosters for the op events.

There are currently 3 K'Vorts, and a CRAP TON of Brels.

I'm having a great time with friendly games so far, but a bit lacking in resources for the expansion pack missions at the moment, I'm looking forward to seeing what Santa sends my way

I'm a little dubious about all the mixing & matching for the tournaments, but there's a nice quiet store nearby that's running them at really low numbers, trying to rope my usual opponent into tagging along, at the very least I could pick up a participation prize and maybe a guaranteed prize ship if last week is anything to go by! I just hope the numbers pick up in the new year as it's the only place near me that's running events...

Thanks for the warm welcome!
