Just started playing tyranids and purchased a hive tyrant and the tyranid swarm box set (carni, termi's hermi's and gargoyals). Been playing @ 750 points with average success and want to move the army up to 1000-1500 points and want to know what are good core all around models you want to take at that point level so i know what i should buy next

For the greater good......and Doughnuts....

It's hard to go wrong with some Venomthropes. They really help out granting cover.
If you feel like getting fancy, then a Malanthrope from forgeworld does the same job as a venomthrope, but is much harder to kill.

I currently fit in 1 Venomthrope and 1 Zoanthrope at 1000. Synapse, Shrouded, and psychic dice. 1 Malantrhrope does the same thing minus psychic stuff for 10 pts cheaper and is harder to instant death. I'm planning on getting one soon.

Hive Tyrants. With a side of Hive Tyrants. Maybe add a seasoning of Hive Tyrants on top for some more Hive Tyrant flavor.

Mawloc, Venomthrope, Zoanthrope. Not necessarily in that order.

Zoanthropes are the Synapse pillar of any non-competitive list. Tough sources of Synapse able to keep up with the swarm because they can run every turn with no downside.

Venomthropes, obviously do their things.

Mawlocs are the single greatest 'in case of emergency' model I know of. If things go south, they can even bash into a current Assault and carve out a hole in your opponent. I beat Skyhammer with a Mawloc, and that's not easy to do. I can't always rely on the big bug, but when things go right, they go VERY right.

But, Hive Tyrants, Flyrants specifically, are the main model in the codex. Running two at 1000pts isn't uncommon, but it's not friendly to do so.

More or less as many hive tyrants as possible and then buff units and obligatory troops etc. But tyrants first.

I agree with what others have said. Zoanthropes and venomthropes are the good way to go. Some more canifexes to make a full squad would also be helpful.
