What does everyone think of Calleb Decima vis-a-vis a conventional Magos Reductor?

He's good with the decima invictus upgrade since it gives him relentless and eternal warrior but the regular magos is a lot more flexible. (must be the lubricant)

The problem I have with Decima Invictus is he is now the army's archmagos, but he doesn't get the ultra badass Archmagos stat line or wargear or anything. :|

yeah, it's slightly disappointing; but not as bad as not getting full access to LR achillies variants imho.

I played him against EC muhreens and he got charged by fulgrim - i figured he had a better chance than the other magos because of the eternal warrior thing.
If i had made any of the invuln saves for the ID hits he would have got to hit back but a regular magos or archmagos wouldn't be able to take even one of those in order to do the same - i felt that EW and a 4++ was better than just 3++ in that situation.

I'm going to try using his mid-isstvan profile next time so i'll see how he does without those tricks up his sleeve next time.

Yeah EW is pretty good, but I am uncertain it is worth the categorical downgrade from the Archmagos statline.

Who needs EW when you're roughly about as tough as a myrmidon. :(

Ii put him with some scyllax to soak up the wounds (huzzah! - 'independent character'!) and he didn't get harmed until the challenge by fulgrim so i think it worked? there was a lot of other distractions available so my opponent didn't really go for him with shooting - The scyllax took a wound from a lascannon and three more from the terminators and fulgrim before the charge - twas messy and futile.

Good idea. I also just realized he is the only unit ever who can take a Macrocarid Explorator as a DT which frees up a Heavy Support slot.

Good point that, I recon that it may be the optimal place for him if you aren't doing the 'decima invictus' thing.

To me it's looking like the loadout of his DT is almost as important as his 'upgrayedds' - i think that may also tie in with the choice of squad/cohort for his bodyguard.
Here are some 'upgrayedds' i've been considering - (sponson single-lascannons and a single hull mounted mauler pattern bolt cannon standard)

sponson twin linked mauler pattern bolt cannons and a hull twin linked phased plasma fusil.

single hull lascannon.

sponson irradiation engines and a hull graviton imploder.

sponson TL lascannon and a hull multi-melta.

The servo-rig is a must take i recon; perhaps the bodyguard should be enginseers to operate the servo rig?

I actually don't plan on giving him a bodyguard. The Macrocarid would be an excellent transport for a squad of 4 Myrmidon Destructors with Grav or Rad Engines, and since Calleb's an Independent Character he can start in it while still having people with him.
