Hi guys,

A friend of mine and I wanted to learn some web development techniques and I love 40K so we decided to create a web roster creator.

It is pretty (we believe) and has a lot of pictures. The design is simple and provides an easy to look at roster, including a simplified text roster version.

Doesn't handle a lot of the unit/upgrade restrictions so you need your codex if you don't want to give all your tactical marines plasma guns for example. It is not meant to replace the codices.

Hope you guys enjoy it and... tell me what you think: Web Roster Creator

I'd remove the point cost or allow them to be added in manually by the user. Otherwise GamesWorkshop will descend upon you harder than the Drop Site Massacre of Istvaan V.

I'd say that it's really good otherwise. Very user friendly from my short experience with it.

I hope they don't. No point for the roster creator without the points. If GW decide it is something that does them harm I will remove the site.

Looks like a good start. It would be nice to see FW models added in the future, though (what can I say: love my Sicarans and Contemptors ).

Not a big fan of FW but I may add them at some point.

This actually looks really good.

I'd also like to see IA units... mainly because I've just fallen in love with Corsairs. So, I might be a touch biased on that front.

In terms of the interface, the one thing I'd suggest is that it would be nice if we had the option to copy wargear on the unit-editing screen. So, say for example that I want a trueborn unit with 4 blasters. It would be nice if I could select blaster once, and then copy that model 3 times (instead of having to click each model individually and selecting the same weapon).

Are you sure about this? I mean, Army Builder and Battlescribe both include point costs.

I like the simplicity and drop down menus for selecting wargear. Don't worry about the points cost being there. Battlescribe practically has the codex in their stuff and GW isn't closing them down. I think as long as you don't give rules for wargear or formations or whatever then they're fine.

I was thinking of doing it but I have no idea where to add another button. I will think of something. Maybe some on hover.... Oh... but hovers don't work great on tablets. I will think of something. It's not hard to do, just can't think of a good design.

After you've created such a unit you can copy it though, so you won't have to add those four trueborn more than once.

That's really not bad. Slow but fancy with pictures.
Would also like to see sub-divisions in a list of already chosen units. Troops, FA and so on.

This is actually really awesome! Great work! I would suggest adding a little bit of error proofing to your program though. Largely I'm talking about formation/detachment restrictions. The Cohort Cybernetica can take Kastelan robots and a Tech Priest Dominus. I was able to drag and drop Kataphrons or anything else in there and also exceed the formation limits. It's just my two cents really, but I absolutely love this thing!

Looks really nice. Nice job

I was messing around with the orks and I noticed there was no option on the Trukk for the Reinforced Ram upgrade.

Also for the Nobs, they do not have the option for the WAAAGH Banner.

I do like that you have given the 'eavy armor upgrade option to be automatically added to every nob or boy in the unit though. that is handy. I think the "warbike" upgrade should work the same way for the Nob unit. Because you cant have some nobs with bikes and some without.

Adding sub-divisions is not a tough job but they make no sense in most formations except the "Combined Arms" and "Allied" detachments. I was thinking of adding a symbol for the sub-division on each unit. Have to think about it. Thank you for the suggestion.

Adding restrictions is a really big and complicated task. For now we've decided that people will have to use their codices. That is also a plus in my book as we tend to overlook the lowly codex. And this is a specialized software for people that should know the army they are playing with.

No, there's an important distinction. Battlescribe itself is written and sold by one author and he does not create nor distribute GW's intellectual property. If you've installed Battlescribe, you're directed to find the catalog files yourself. They're maintained by volunteers who, importantly, are not compensated for their work.

You can probably expect a cease and desist letter within a year. If you make the mistake of making money from this, even through advertising, worse may happen.

All that said, the visual design and layout are great. Good luck!

I don't know about Army Builder, but Battlescribe get away with it because Battlescribe only provides the program and the interface - the army lists to use with it are user-generated content and therefore not their responsibility.

I am currently thinking of a best way to do that as there is no way to add a unit inside a unit with the current architecture. Maybe we can just add a 0pts upgrade to the unit that shows it has a Dedicated Transport from the given type. Do you guys think that would be enough? Or is it needed to link two units in some visual way?

Add another slot in the unit.
Tac Squad: 1 Sergeant, 4 Marines, 5 additional slots for Marines, 1 DT slot.
Generate the DT options similiar to selectModelIndex($index)

Upgrades for the DT as usual.

Love it!

There are a couple of things I'd like to see added:

The ability to save your collection (i.e. pre-configured units to drop into CAD, formations, etc.)

Weapon profiles in the printed army lists.

Ability to run off-line and edit the datafiles (which you'll need to do in if you want to start selling it).

I would totally pay for that!

That's not a bad idea. I will think about it. The biggest problem will be the stats. We'll see.

Thank you.

Not going to be selling it. And if this thing doesn't get us into GW's crosshairs adding profiles for the weapons will surely do.

You can save any list (even single units) and then load them. That's what I do. If you want it easier than that it would need a Data Base and we're not prepared to do that yet.

You can implement the collection feature that I suggested without a DB. An option to save a list that contains a selection of units (not detachments or formations) to be saved as a collection. Loading that collection then adds it to a new category on the left so that you can pull pre-configured units into your detachment rather than blank units.

That would be fantastic.

I think you should seriously consider de-coupling the datasources from the interface and producing a datasource editor. It'll protect you from legal action and allow other people to update the data set.

I really do think you have something that you could sell - your interface is far better than the other products on the market.

If you're serious, you could probably import Battlescribe Catalog files. They're just XML.

Hmm... the collection is an interesting idea. I will consider it.

We shall see about the de-coupling of data sources. I don't see it happening without some additional "clicks" by the users in each session. And the main idea of this web roster is to be fast and simple.

And how do you add Dedicated Transports? AKA for Gladius, how do you get them to show as free?

Only thing I've come across at the moment is the Nids are missing the Leviathan formations it seems. Otherwise great roster builder.

Sisters of Battle when their next codex comes out probably.

Still thinking of a better way to add Dedicated Transports. They are added additionally from their section (Fast Attack usually). About the Gladius transports - just add a Rhino/Razorback/Drop-pod. There is a "FREE" option for each of them that adds negative points.

Thanks.

Which Leviathan formations are missing? I think I added them. Maybe just the first lictor one as it seemed too silly to me.
