Title says it, I have finally decided I want to write actually decent background for my Dynasty including new units, formations, characters, etc.
I'm curious as how Dakka views such homebrewed things?
Don't worry, I'm not going to walk into my flgs and try to use them, it's conceptual.
That all being said, would Dakka enjoy reading about a homebrew dynasty?

Both my Space Marines and Eldar are home brewed. Fluff wise the Space Marines are a chapter that after suffering severe casualties the Imperium wrote off, but has since rebuilt itself, and has formed its own small region. It can hide itself as a "loyalist" within the massive engine that is the Imperium, or work against it when needed.

My Eldar belong to a small craftworld whose farseers saw their salvation as an allied force of the chapter. They have a secure region of space to operate in, and use their precognitive abilities to guide the two powers to continued survival.

I enjoy it for the flavor. I never really did things with unique units/rules and the like. If you've got a tight knit group that you play with, definitely talk it over with them though. Involve them in the development so you can try to keep things balanced and the like.

It plays well, the Taus shoot while the Necrons go CC

I don't care about Chapter names, colors, history or events much, or the same for characters. When you start making up new units, though, and intend to use them in a game, that's where problems tend to arise, as homebrew units tend to be oversaturated with options, too cheap (points-wise) or slathered in SR while supposedly a "specialist" role.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I guess I use a few homebrew stuff (non-canon Captains and suchlike), but nothing major.

My Imperial Guard regiment I guess is homebrewed, the Cadian 13th, but they just have a different organisational structure and ranking.

Aside from that, I've created a lot of homebrew armies in fluff, such as the 501st Polonian Drop Infantry (whom I used during a session of Only War RPG) or some homebrewed Chapters who made their way into my Deathwatch Kill Team.

My general consensus on homebrew is: underplay them at the start. I've seen too many special snowflake, Mary Sue-esque homebrews that attempt to either break the setting by how they act, or just feel like blatant one-upmanship. Most of these tend to be Space Marine or Imperial Guard though, and most Necron ones have been very good!

I tend to go by the logic of "less is more": the less core changes there are, the less likely people will call you out on it. Still, we'd all love to see what you've got!

The setting is intentionally open for players to make their own chapters, hive fleets, regiments and the like, and I see no harm in that. There's no reason why a homebrew chapter can't be as cool as any canon chapter with a little creativity.

I've got my own ork warband, but it basically functions like a regular ork army, and most of the fluff I make up is for important characters.

I'm either going to get a venerable to represent the "Executioner" or Assault centurians because Assault Centurians are super fluffy in the New Order

The New Order is the Marine Chapter that TS uses in the "Crusade of Fury" Fiction Thread. It's basically a made up Crusade that him, me, and several others take part in. You can go check it out in the Fiction section if you're interested.

Crusade of Fury is an ongoing thread in Dakka Fiction featuring many different writers doing there own thing, while working for or against the Imperium's Crusade.

The New Order is TS's force, and does an outstanding job messing with all of us.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with Homebrew chapters and etc, as they bring something new to the universe. Of course, just don't get too carried away with the fluff, and they're completely fine by me.

I want to enjoy homebrewed fluff, but I admit that I've never come across any that I've liked. Most of the time I try it's 'Mary Sue Marines who are the bestest and specialest Marines EVAH,' 'I'm-totally-not-ripping-off-some-other-franchise-just-dont-compare-my-chapter-symbol-to-the-X-Men-logo' marines, or a fifty page pile of typos and grammatical errors.

Even more than that is the 'So What?' factor that accompanies all franchise settings like 40k. It boils down to this: we know who the important factions, sub-factions, and characters are in 40k. If my (or your) creation were important, the story would be about them. So a homebrewed chapter (or dynasty) needs to be able to pass the 'so what?' test to be interesting, and unfortunately, no sooner do you manage to successfully fend off the 'so what?' test than you run afould of the 'Mary Sue' speedbump, at which point most offerings faceplant and break their own necks.

I like the IDEA of homebrewed factions, but rarely the execution. My preference is to run canon, fleshed out factions (Ultramarines, Sautekh Dynasty) followed by canon, obscure factions (Emperor's Spears Chapter, Kabal of the Bladed Lotus) and lastly by the ones we make up ourselves.

My Craftworld, Corsair, and Wych Cult allegiances are all my own made up factions though, so I can't really complain. (My Kabal, Coven, Harlequin, Space Marine, and Imperial Guard are canon.)

I like it, so long as it isn't TO far from fluff or TO marry sue.

"here's my homebrew chapter, they were from one of the missing legions, are immune to most of the imperial rules, best buddies with a tau sept, eldar craft world, and have a pet 'Nid. Also, they are the best of the best, so much so that even Ultramarines look up to them in awe. They know all of the Imperium's Secrets, and have no flaws of their own" blech.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

... Nearly described my first rendition of my homebrew

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.
