So, I want an Inquisitor to wade in, smiting the heretics/xenos/daemons in glorious combat.

But, of course, Inquisitors don't actually seem that powerful. And their cool stuff is spread out across all three disciplines, so though Rad grenades are REALLY useful, you can't take them with Terminator armour, or anything more deals than a power weapon. So, what are people's builds for Inquisitors (and retinues) - does anyone field a unit that can hold it's own??

If you want rad grenades with your Ordo malleus beat stick wielding TDA and a daemon hammer, take his side kick, Xenos lover mc gee.

I played a game yesterday as an IG with two Ordos Malleus Inquisitors in terminator armor. I put them in two melta vet squads on chimeras. It was certainly an interesting unit, never quite used something like that before.

It provided a small melee threat in an obsec package. The issues are that T3 hurts, unwieldy is painfully slow, and being the only character in combat is rough. In my case the Vet sergeant took a couple challenges, letting the Terminator swing freely.

I am now thinking of trying them attached to the two backfield vet squads to provide a counter assault threat for drop pods.

If you don't care about being a pysker look at solomon lok from IA4, he's a scrappy guy for the points, and has 2+, 5+

Agreed. The named forgeworld inquisitors - Solomon Lok and Hector Rex - are pretty badass.

However, if you're asking for a UNIT that can hold its own, the Inquisition does that extremely well.

Mix up a Henchman unit from Crusaders, Death Cultists and 2 or 3 Priests.

Take the War Hymn "The Emperor Protects". Those Crusaders' storm shields are now generating 3+ invulnerable saves with a reroll, and he's got to get through those to get to the soft-and-squishy death cultists, who are each laying down 3-4 WS5 S4 power sword attacks each....

Inquisitors themselves are very much support units. Rad Grenades are nice, but equally you can take Psyker to take access to Prescience (reroll to hit) or Empyrean Brain Mines, which may prevent an opponent attacking.

If you want an inquisitor to fight himself, Ordo Malleus and Terminator Plate is a given.

Malleus with power armour and two daemonblades is a fun choice

Take an OM Inquisitor with TDA and an OX Inquisitor with rad grenades for the best of both worlds. Use the cheaper OX Inquisitor to accept challenges against S6 or higher characters to keep your more expensive beatstick away from ID attacks. For the retinue, I go with a rule of threes: 3 Crusaders, 3 DCAs, and 3 arco-flags.

Two daemonblades. Terminator or crusader escort. Sisters of Battle Ministorum Priest with the relic that lets him auto pass his Hymns. Pack it in a Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer. Wreck face.

Welcome to the Freakshow!

Or gets rad grenades. OH gets null rods and space crossbows.

Indeed. The Ordo Hereticus always struck me as better for supporting shooting - the Psyocculum is worth its weight in gold with the current psyker-heavy game.

Oops, you are correct, Crazyterran. Thanks, I'll edit my post.

My retinue will look like this:

Solomon Lok
Major Markus Durra
4 Crusaders
1 Ministorum Priest (power axe + las/bolt/plasma pistol)
1 psyker (rolls on divination, usually for prescience)

Crusaders, Lok and Markus Durra soak wounds, priest and psyker sit in the back. They ride in a rhino or razorback with psybolt ammo.

I've run xeno inquisitor with nades + 50 ig with 3 power axes + priest + Yarik

That was a blob of death in mellee. This nades are nuts.

You could replace Yarik with Azrael to give them 4++ - it's probably preferable. But i like fielding Yarik - he's a tough old fart - and just didn't want to invest too much in one squad.

Hector Rex w/ Priest (or two) for save rerolls in CC, 3-4 crusaders to tank 3++, 3-4 DCA, 1-2 servitors for PFs and maybe a second Inquisitor grenade caddy. I'm trying to figure out if Rex still knows Sanctuary by default, it doesn't seem that FW have FAQ'd the rules from 6th ed or not.

Durra is a good call - WS/I5 with a heavy chainsword is a lot better than you'd expect from 'just a guardsman' - and the Preferred Enemy (Tyranids) can do you proud on the odd game where it's relevant.

From Forge World's downloads section
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/resources/fw_site/fw_pdfs/Warhammer_40000/Psykers.pdf

Hector Rex (IA7: The Siege of Vraks – Part Three, p124)
Hector Rex gains the following special rule: Psyker (Mastery level 2). He
can use the following powers (taken from Codex: Grey Knights, page 25):
Sanctuary, Holocaust and Dark Excommunication.

Since I don't see him FAQ'd anywhere else, I would say he has Sanctuary. Just because that power did something totally different at the time of printing shouldn't mean he forgot how to cast it. He also has a pair of spells that don't exist in any current game rules, so just don't waste Warp Charges on those.

It's also in the most recent Vraks book, which is current and replaced that one.

He explicitly has
~ Sanctuary
~ Hammerhand
~ Banishment
~ Force (from Arias)

Sanctuary on a guy with a storm shield is an amazing power, especially paired with priests.

Also has 3 wounds, an invuln save and look out sir. So wound juggling and (rerollable) invuln save shenannigans plenty.
