Subject: Can you make Iron Hand Straken work in a guard army?

So, I realy want to use Straken in my imperial guard army. Why? Because he's almost nearly as epic as Ollanius Pius. He's a guardsman who can punch a land raider to death. But.. He's stuck in a tiny little command squad.. Does anyone have any tips or ideas on how one can use Straken in a guard army?

The most obvious solution would be sm allies. Add in an artificer+shield eternal sm character to tank wounds. A medic for fnp. And you've got a tough squad capable of not dying.
I'd go with white scars and also add a white scar indep to a platoon. Straken makes guards much better in mellee. You want that hit and run.
Make a mellee platoon with a few axes to fully utilize Straken's aura. Now you also need to add durability to platoon. There are different ways. Could use psychers, could run vsg, could take dark angels instead of white scars and add Azrael for 4++ and another tanking dude to Straken. Could take 2 times more guards. All are viable options.
Will it be competitive? Most likely not as competitive as what you could do with more points in artillery or droppods. Will it kick ass from time to time? I bet it will!

You know, thats a realy friggin awesome idea! I wonder if you can do something similar with Space Wolves.. As thats the marine army I currently own.. If not, I might need to get the vanilla marine codex just for that setup..
Thanks! =D

It's really too bad that straken is not an independent character otherwise he would be amazing in a blob squad and might actually be worth his large point cost.
But as it stands I agree I think the ally way is the only way out. Which is too bad. Because it would be awesome to have him kicking ass in a large squad or jumping out of a valk with some ogyrns.

Straken in a large blob would have been awesome.. Enemies charge! Kill loads of guardsmen, Then BAM! Straken punches his marines to death! =P

I would add an inquisitor. Rad and Psychotroke grenades to make the guardsman do something in cc, a nice armor save, and a land raider to pal around in. Plus he's his own detachment so he's basically a freebie. Then maybe add Nork for funsies?

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

The biggest problem with Straken other than his point cost is that he must join a command squad. If he would be able to join a blob squad he would be infinitely more useful.

Staying pure IG:
Straken
CMD SQD w/ medi-pack ( FNP), regimental standard (for +1 combat resolution), carapace, and all vets armed with laspistols and close combat weapons.
Nork Deddog
Commissar Yarrick
3 Ministorum Priests (war hymns)
3 Primaris Psykers (force weapon and fish for Ironarm in Bio)
3 Enginseers (p-axe, servo-arm, and tank on a 3+)
It's only 875 points, but it still needs a way of getting them into CC.

I was planning on putting him in with a Deep Striking command squad. Not to be a dedicated assault unit, just to discourage my CCS from being assaulted.

If you're allying Marines, then taking a Dread in a Pod is a perfect way to discourage assault of your IG, while providing another "big gun" and Melee resistance.
It's pretty much what I think I'll be doing, when I get back around to playing Guard again.
