Hi all,
After starting up a GK army after a long absence from the hobby, I'm already starting to feel like there's not much choice with them. I used to play SM/Eldar, which seemed to have a lot more options.
Short of allying in a few friendly units, what have you guys done to spice up your lists?
But the question is, are they just a boring army?
Cheers!

Cheers! GK's have never been an army that had a breadth of options and unit choice. In fact, in their very first incarnation, they literally only had Terminators.
I don't really see them as boring, rather, their unique factor comes from the fact that they have equipment and wargear that no other army does and play in a relatively unique manner and are an extremely distinct looking force on the table.
Their newer fluff however is pretty atrocious and boring, but aside from that and some cookie cutter army builds (which can occur with every army) they're not boring, they just find their mojo in a different way than something like Eldar who have a Skittles approach to their unit selection.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

They're boring if you want to be competitive with them. But, I find that they become a bit more interesting if you return their Inquisitor allies back into the list. An OM Inquisitor in TDA leading a squad of GK Termies looks pretty cool. A squad of black-armored "Storm Troopers" holding an objective before a squad of GK in power armor teleport/shunt in to back them up--dare I say--forges a sweet narrative.

If I could change one thing about the GKs, it would be to erase about 12 years worth of fluff. It's some of the worst, ham-fisted fanfiction that GW has produced, and that's really saying something.

GK are a boring army only if you want to play competitvely, in which case there is pretty much all of 1 list. Throw in some Inquisition allies and you have an incredibly cool army that looks amazing on the tabletop. I despise their recent fluff, but that's just me.

the codex before they had right now was fun. They could do msu lists with marines and another one witht he inqusition guys. What they have right now has fewer option, and is probably weaker. But a lot more unfun to play vs bad lists.

I've always been under the impression that Grey Knights were an 'additional' / 'supplementary' force to be added onto other, larger Imperial armies.
Then the codex was released and while it added more units, they still feel like an additional force to add to a main force. They're specialists for killing daemons and so it makes no sense for them to be a large army fighting say, Tyranids.
Grey Knights IMO should have been kept in a codex with the Assassinorium and Ordos Xenos to be extras to add to a force.
If you disagree with that, then I demand a Deathwatch Codex for the Ordos Xenos who are far more interesting than Grey Knights.

The new codex is boring due to a severe lack of options and terrible internal balance, along with Psycannons becoming Salvo.

Boring codex? Maybe. There's pretty much just one good unit per FoC selection, but it's an awesomely good selection.
Boring to play? Hell no! They are one of the few armies that plays equally in all phases, with a tailorable play style based on pre-game rolls. Its anything but boring.
Boring to play against? How? I can see it being frustrating, but never boring.

it is easy to make a boring gk army, Not all gk amies are boring. There are a lt of units almost no one fields that are quite interesting and you don't have to model termies the same as paladins or strike squads the same as purifiers. You can, but you don't have to.
If you ask me GK are not nearly as boring as all competitive "top tier list" or most Tau, IG or Necron armies.

Well, GK have a lot to offer.
From Draigo to Purifiers to Dreadknights.
The army is a bit low and their shooty support isn't premium.
For this, I'd include some allies.

In terms of lore Grey Knights are extremely boring, and have been ever since Ward got his hands on them.
For Grey Knights to be interesting, you need to give weight to what they gave up to become incorruptible. They shouldn't really be people any more - while not as extreme as what is done to servitors, they should be immune to the call of Chaos in part because everything about them that might lead them to be swayed has been cut out of them, and in part because they deliberately avoid temptation. Ward's 5th edition codex sucked because it denies them this weight - in that book, sacrifice is for other people, while the Grey Knights themselves can perform blood rites to sate a Bloodthirster, use the chaos gods' magic numbers, wield daemon weapons and generally act as offensively unlike Grey Knights as it was possible to write them.

Awesome responses people, some varied opinions here!
I just feel that apart from dreadknights, they don't have anything that really stands out.
Lore wise they are pretty linear, but I kind of like the whole "one and only purpose" thing.
Will have to have a look at my list and see what I can come up with!

Think about 10 Purifiers in drop pod who combat squad when they arrive.
This would mean two times ''cleansing flame'' for the enemy.
A lot of dead bodies, especially Orks or Nids.

When played alone, I find them a little bit boring. I find (with my admittedly limited experience) that their game plan will almost always boil down to deep striking in and trying to kick the gak out of your opponent in turns 1 and 2, as the army just doesn't have enough models to survive the return fire of the more shooty armies. Therefore, you'll get two outcomes:
1) You hurt your opponent badly enough, either annihilating them completely, or to the extent that your limited forces can win the mission.
2) You do not hurt your opponent badly enough, and get your expensive troops poked to death over the remainder of the game.
I don't find their models boring though. I think that both power armoured and terminator variants look very very cool. The only model I really have a problem with is the dreadknight, which I'm pretty sure I'm not unique in.

As an army they are boring to the extent that they are limited in their options. You're not going to be able to field anywhere near as many variants as, say an Eldar army, a nid army or even a vanilla SM army. This is fine, so far as they are supposed to be limited and only used in a few roles. It would be very bad if you could not ally them with others. However, now all you need to do to spice them up is to mix in some allies. You can ally them with Inquisition or Assassins. I have available as allies for mine: Assassins, Inquisition, IG and vanilla SM. I generally use them on their own though.
As someone's only army I would think they're more than a little dull, I use mine on their own as I have other armies to choose from so I don't worry about that aspect.

I don't think they are boring. In terms of the fluff, the Garro Horus Heresy stories are pretty good. Not sure about the modern GK fluff. Their codex fluff is pretty dull if I'm honest.
In terms of the game, I think if you play them by themselves, I can see them getting a bit boring if you are doing the same thing with the same units over and over again. As an army they have a small number of options/units compared to other armies. That's why I only play them every so often, to keep things relatively fresh for me so I don't get bored of the dreadknight/ terminator/librarian/Draigo combo.
They probably work best alongside another imperial army and I can see them complimenting a mechanised (long range firepower) or blobguard (lots of cheap bodies/meatshields) Astra Militarum force really well.
