I use Vanguard Vets wherever possible because their upgrades are dirt cheap. Melta (Only in the newer kit) is certainly an option, wouldn't reccommend anything else for them because of the simple fact that they are meant to get close up. Melta bombs as an upgrade are good too and a Power Fist on the Sarge works well as a CC weapon, especially VS vehicles.

I’m a fan of 5 men, 2 flamers, vet sarge with a power weapon. Jump packs or drop pod to fit with the list. Usually first on the list for melta bombs if I have a spare 5 points.

Points are reasonable. Makes for a nice bully unit to go harass things in the backfield. Small enough to hug cover and keep out of LOS.

If you are doing a full company list, they could work fine in a free razorback. Might drop the sarge upgrades, as points are normally tight in those lists and they would be better spent on more guns elsewhere. But keep the duel flamers.

If you are going to take a powerfist on the sergeant you might as well give him that shiny eviscerator. Same price (if I'm remembering right) you get the same number of attacks and armour bane...

The eviscerator is a bit of an odd duck. It’s a very expensive unwieldy weapon. Not the sort of thing I want to have on a 1W model. Or a 1A model. You can either hide it in the squad, or give it to the sarge. The sarge could be a vet, for the extra attack, but can also be challenged. But it’s basically a melta bomb you can make all your attacks with. For 20 more points. Not worth it IMHO, as I like to keep the cost down on my assault squads. If your CT/list has some way to leverage more attacks, maybe. But assault marines are a lousy platform for delivering eviceration.
